Comments on news posted 2009-03-13 09:03:41: A new carrier by the name of Zero1 Mobile is getting a lot of attention for their latest offer: unlimited voice and data on smart phones for $69.95/month, without a contract, on a network as broad as the one owned by AT&T. ..

If they are using VOIP then all they have is a data only plan which for $70 is too expensive.

Well if youa re like some of my friends that lvie wher youcnan oly get satellite or EDVO both of which are the same price but have caps this might actually be an alternative. This for $70 or Verizon EDVO for $60 but with a 5 GB cap and $256 per GB overgae fee. which is better?

I see an AT&T lawsuit coming very soon

The phones run on GSM networks including AT&T's and T-Mobile's. But Zer01 isn't buying time wholesale from AT&T and T-Mobile, Piilani said. Instead, they have purchased their own IP backbone and are using interconnect (AKA roaming) agreements, the way Verizon and Sprint phones work on each other's networks.

By using interconnect agreements, Zer01 can get around the carriers' 5GB/month data caps and offer truly unlimited data, Piilani said.
I just don't see AT&T sitting still for this company's customers running unlimited data over the AT&T network and the company paying minimal fees to AT&T. I see a lengthy lawsuit in their immediate future.

Re: Lame

Can you get a data only plan using a phone from the major carriers (and not a PC card or something?) Maybe you can, I dunno..

Anyway, as the drunk guy said, everyone else has a 5GB limit on their "unlimited" data plans.

Ignoring the 5GB limit.. a Data Connect plan from AT&T is $60. A tether-capable plan is $65. Add the price of a skype plan + phone number and you're at $70.

If it wasn't on the AT&T network (which has horrid coverage around me) I'd probably jump on this.

"It's our own VPN, and we're actually providing the data the customer is using," Piilani said.

I read the article wise guy. But maybe you don't understand how AT&T will respond. The method that Zer01 is using results in less income and higher costs to AT&T. Some companies tried to use interconnect agreements once before for those free conference calls and used the revenue splits to stiff AT&T. It was within the regulations, but AT&T and other carriers just shut them down anyway.

So, I don't expect AT&T to sit by idly without doing something to cripple it or get more money out of it.

The links you posted relate to call termination fraud. Call termination fraud doesn't require a relationship before the fact, the telco just sends a nice bill for call termination.

I would imagine these Zer01 people aren't doing this under AT&T's nose, especially since they went through the process of becoming an MVNO under them.

They are probably paying by-the-byte, so why should AT&T care?

Actually they did. Their rates were better than Verizon and they offered more high tech services. They were an MVNO on the Verizon Network. Unfortunately their customers did not pay their bills in a timely manor and they ran out of money. They would have probably have been successful if they had been stimulated. I would have been an Amp'd Mobile customer but they did not have any local numbers in this area for incoming calls from my land line.

Amp'd Mobile posted a notice when Verizon would cut off their customers. Shortly thereafter Amp'd posted a list of assets they were liquidating. At that point they went Chapter 7, complete liquidation of the company, because it turned into a monetary black hole. I did not hear of anyone taking over their customer base.

Re: I see an AT&T lawsuit coming very soon

Maybe they are doing like what "unlimited" webhosts do... buy a big block of transfer and gamble on the fact that most people will only use a small amount and cancel out the big/power users. If this company pays by the byte or has purchased a large block of data usage, ya they'll be screwed if the only people who sign up are power users, but if they get a balance of casual users and power users, I can see this being beneficial to all parties.

Dunno, just a thought.

Not if it is unlimited and you can "talk" to people by using it. Er, wait... You've got something going there... All these plans are too expensive! 8-)
