VoIP over EVDO doesnt really work anyway

While some may applaud them for pro-actively banning VoIP, the fact that they are using EVDO means it wouldnt have worked well to begin with. The latency is so high on EVDO (relatively) that having a useful conversation is impossible.

Latency & Issues on EVDO

Latency certainly makes conversation difficult on EVDO, but out of curiosity, is it also particularly bad with jitter & packet loss?

Just wondering because regardless of which tower I'm associate to, I'm seeing 200ms jitter and 5-9% packet loss.

My personal experience in different areas of the country was that the jitter and packet loss were fine, it was the latency that really killed the experience. I didnt conduct any scientific tests mind you, all I did was fire up a VoIP call to see if it worked or not. I tried in from the West Coast all the way to the East Coast, and each time the speech of the other person was clear and uninterrupted (and they said mine was too), however the delay in transmission (latency) was unavoidable no matter what settings I tweaked.

I wonder....

How easy it would be to fake out the system into thinking my PC is a mobile device. Probably just as simple as changing the user agent in my browser. Worked for the free wifi at AT&T hotspots that was meant for the iphone...

What's to stop you from using VOIP on port 80?

Yeah, it's easy to block SIP ports, but there's at least one VOIP provider that operates over port 80-and this can't really be blocked.

Aircell GoGo

Aircell is a half fast company with half fast service! Did they mention the service is non-refundable even if you never connect? Or that the broadband speeds their talking about is actually limited to 80mb total. within this is two VOIP phones which share this bandwidth servely limiting the speeds you can actually use. Plus big brother is watching dont think that you can be doing ANYTHING on a airlines without some part of the US MARSHALLS office involved. (its called SUPER CALEA) which means anything you do is being monitored. So after you get your life checked out by the marshalls office you are ready to download a video or file. Well I hope the file isnt larger than 10MB or else your download will get terminated. And yes that means no streaming media.

I used to work there thought the whole thing was a sham Verizon had a whole system in place that worked great but aircell won the bid. Thanks alot uncle sam
