| Telco hate competition I live in a rural area where I was paying $100 per month for a land line and Internet. Then I discovered a home grown telephone company from another town provided local Cable, Internet and VOIP for $89, When I cancelled my phone and Internet service with the local phone company, I was bombarded with questions. Do I have Internet? Do I have a telephone? I have a cell phone. What if the power goes out; you can't charge the phone. I have car a charger. And of course I could keep my local line for only $30 plus metered calling. Why? I don't don't want it. Why?
I finally said their services cost me way too much money for zero value. The broadband speed most of the time wasn't much faster than 56K,. and I was tired of metered calling. I can use a payphone and save money. They didn't like that too much either. I had to call back the next day because I was not disconnected. The dim bulb who took the disconnect order decided to run a scam and disconnect me next month. That did not work either, and it did not endear me to the phone company.
This is the kind of stuff that happens in rural mid-America when mega telcos buy local. The same thing happens when a national ISP buys a local, These giant companies want high profit and zero cost in rural areas. It is why they do not expand. Residents never win. What we get is big promises, worse service and higher cost with every merger. -- Mac: No windows, No gates, Apple inside |
