As most Telco based Wireless providers go to LTE, WiMAX will be more of a niche.
Too many 'bell' style carriers have many millions/billions invested in
a) spectrum supported by CDMA/GSM/UMTS and soon LTE (reuse?), and 2G/3G/4G compatibility
b) international roaming agreements
c) handset vendors/chipset vendors (except Intel)

I don't have anything against WiMAX - this is more of a large scale issue. +3 billion GSM based handsets with global coverage.

I do think that WiMAX can make inroads in:
- replacement of ADSL
- low(er) cost mobile broadband
- integrated devices
- 'emerging markets'
- rural areas that need data and have none.

Who has more capital and fixed cash stream, Verizon and ATT, or Clearwire's 1 time investors and bankrupt Sprint?

Only problem here is Verizon, through a previous announcement, appears they are not going to support SIM cards or the equivalent. This will most likely require a special run of handset just for Verizon. Either that or they will use standard phones and weld a SIM into the case such that it cannot be removed.

I suspect that Verizon's 'support' of SIM cards will be some form of hack - either fixed SIM card, or forcing of a SIM card to IMEI so that you can not switch handsets w/o going through them.

Hope that LTE can be implemented as specified.

If LTE can be implemented as promised, the wireless carriers may be able to give the Cable TV and Telephone Companies a run for their money.

does this mean that there will be lte phones? or are the verizon phones we have now backwards compatible?

i'm thinking in particular of the blackberry storm i just got.

Re: hmmm LTE is vaporware

who the hell cares.
many a times have i heard, company x to implement service y in zz number of markets by blah target date.

leats see some action. verizon, if i recall correctly, had to delays one of their major initiatives only because the govt pushed back the move from analog to digital from feb to june. and thats an external circumstances. lets see what internal circumstances causes delays in this initiative.

oh yeah, i also forgot to add. I live in nyc and i still do not have their so called fios available in my area.

Remember that 700Mhz auction? I believe that is what VZW is going to base their LTE network on. I could be mistaken though.

You are not mistaken. DO a search on dslreports.com for a Verizon Wireless letter to the FCC on why pushing the Analog to Digital switch was a bad idea and how it effects them.

LTE to initially be data only

I've heard, from wireless telecom engineers, that Verizon's LTE deployment will focus 100% on data initially. There will be data cards and probably some smart phones with CDMA/LTE chipsets.

Verizon has no short terms plans to offer voice over LTE so the status quo for voice will continue for the foreseeable future. I suppose a new world phone would have a CDMA/LTE and GSM chipset. Eek!
