Comments on news posted 2009-04-06 08:48:18: Last week we noted that consumer advocates were annoyed with two things: AT&T changing their TOS to further restrict streaming, and the release of a new version of Skype for the iPhone that limits the application to only working via Wi-Fi. ..

"Done in error"?

Bullshit. I've worked for some decent sized companies and NOTHING legal gets done in error. EVERYTHING is done deliberately, with specific intentions, and reviewed multiple time by a legion of lawyers. It may have been a mistake in the sense that they tried to get away with something, were called on it, and are now backtracking in damage control mode, but to say it was done in error is just flat out lying.

It was just another clarification of unlimited that I didn't understand.......

No error

It costs plenty for evaluations and lawyer look overs...nothing is done to a TOS/AUP without a ton of thought. It's just AT&T, like Facebook (with their claiming of IP rights over all posted content) misjudged the reaction.

They now partner with DirecTV, though they did partner with Dish for TV and the Homezone DBS/DSL hybrid unit.

That is true. I worked for a large company and no contract was signed and no change in customer services was done without many hours of meetings and without lawyers signing off every step of the way.

It's only "done in error" when you get pressure from the press and it makes you look bad.

I aint no punk beach

I call horse crap as well. As an affected user, I was still going to use it anyways, albeit it limited to 30 mins to 1 hour a month. With capage, you're not going to be watching much.

I can imagine what went down at ATT.

-Mr. Mes Management: What the hell is a slingbox and why are all these nerds griping?
-random guy being yelled at: It is a placeshifting device where you can watch tv on the go via the interwebnet.
-Mr. Mes Management: Why the hell would anyone want to do that? I have a 72" OLED screen in my theater room. Watch tv on a tiny screen laptop screen haha.
-random guy 2 being yelled at: Here I'll show on my laptop. Let me see whats on my TIVO...boop bop boop bop.. A's are playing the Yankee's now.
-Mr. Mes Management: Hmmm, the quality is not so bad, the speed is good...So you mean I could have been watching ball games all this time? OMGWTFBBQ. Where can I get one of these things and get those idiots in legal to change the TOS and release a press release.
-random guy: Ai ai, captain!
-Mr. Mes Management: What did you say?
-randowm guy: oh nothing sir. Have a good day.

Echostar owns Sling, not Dish Network. Dish Networks was owned by Echostar until 2007, but was spun off as it's own legal entity. They still have a very symbiotic relationship and one probably couldn't survive in the current state without the other, but they are separate legal entities.

Re: "Done in error"?

While it was done in error... I suspect that the only error was having people take notice of the new ToS.

They changed position because of consumer backlash

... period. They were taking a beating from customers, websites, press, etc and they backpedaled.... FOR NOW.

AT&T chickened out.

They were within their rights to limit wireless bandwidth hogging, but they backed down.

It may be a mistake....

...but at some point during the creating of said TOS, some people put the text in, so even if it WAS a mistake, if they could have gotten away with it they would have.
