Sabotagee? That's di uh bio lical!

Hmm.

I know there is a buried cable near a railbed a few miles away. How do I know this? Aside from the Telephone Buried Cable Warning signs, a farmer with a backhoe was taking a shortcut to his other field along the dormant tracks.
15 minutes later, a cop and three vans show up (phone trucks actually).
Now he didn't dig or anything. But I suspect there was some sort of "device" that alerted someone...

 Terrorist dry-run for larger attacks??

Potential terrorist walk thru for more widespread damage planned against US infrastructure?

There are a few dozen choke points in the fiber backbones in the US that are only marginally protected. Those knowing where they are(and many people in the industry and also large national customers know that info) could wreak havoc on the internet and also landline phone systems in the US.

So I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that was just pure vandalism.

P.S.>> News items say the cuts have all been repaired.

mmmm, nothing like paleo-con wet dreams. should we bomb iran now?
come on, tk. i would think given you incredible anti-union bias that you would *jump* at the chance to blame them...oh wait, i forgot which party was in office. obviously they heard gitmo was closed

nothing more than vandalism. someone trying to get their way and making sure that fiber was cut to make the maximum impact.
selfish, but vandalism nonetheless.

I am a huge fan of technology. I also am growing concerned about how dependent we have become on it. This incident proves how easy it can be for a simple act to take out major chunks of the technology we use/need/want.

In my radio communication endeavors I always advise people that are moving to the new digital linked systems to keep the older units as backup for just this type of event.

The thing that concerns me most is the eventuality of an EMP pulse being generated and lack of hardening on most commercial systems. I pray it never happens but...

my proof is just as valid as yours.
however, unlike most of your party, i subscribe to the belief that the simplistic answer is usually more correct
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occam%27s_razor)

so you tell me, which is more likely:
(a) someone trying to get their way in a collective bargaining agreement, given that both sides know *exactly* what fiber bundle it is

(b) some terrorist sleeper cell decides to come out of hiding and sabotage the fiber bundle that services silicon valley, researches the exact location and cuts it just to piss off the "american infidels" when actually silicon valley is not just the american devil anymore!

hmmmm....
call it intuition.

Any proof to support this? Or is this just some paranoid imagining? What next, terrorists are responsible for clogging American toilets?

Consequences.

I have no idea who did this.

I would hope, that justice would be equally blind and apply the same penalty regardless of the perpetrator. It carries big-time pena;ties in the federal system.

My post was made as supposition. His post was made as if it was a fact.

Such a tough decision.
A has happened before. B has never happened before.

It's just so hard to tell which one is plausible.

Maybe Tk needs to read this.

no, my post involves a similar amount of supposition. the only differences, is when one is based on reality, the supposition generally points one into the direction of sabotage. however, when one is grounded in the "fight terror, defend freedom" paleo-con talking points of yesteryear, people generally tend to think you are talking simply to further your political agenda against a president and legislature that has different beliefs and policies regarding "terrorism". your thinly veiled attempts are easily recognized and spotted.

Your supposition sounds a lot like fear-mongering. I think recent history has shown that fear-mongering is rarely useful.

But terrorist cells couldn't possibly be in the U.S., right?

but an easter bombing in the uk (where lives would have been lost) is related to the cutting of a fiber optic cable in silicon valley how?
grasping at straws again, tk....

You beat me to it.

Seriously, when people start living their lives in so much fear that every little thing sounds like a terrorist plot, the terrorists have truly won.

Labor Negotiations

I'm sure the ongoing negotiations have absolutely nothing to do with this incident. To paraphrase Clausawitz, "War is diplomacy by other means."

A dumb tactic, but one that has been used before.

FUD Alert!

Of course our infrastructure is vulnerable! That's the inherent nature of any infrastructure. You do due diligence in hardening the really weak points in the infrastructure against reasonable threats (idiots in backhoes, teenagers climbing transmission pylons, etc...) but how do you protect against persons bent on intentional damage to the hundreds of thousands of miles of fiber, copper, power lines, water lines, gas lines & other things that are right out in the open? The short answer is you can't. Anyone who wants to can take out many of these things with a spare five minutes and a hacksaw or an old junker car. I mean their targets are all very clearly marked! As for the people who cut this cable, what they did was clearly wrong and endangered peoples lives (interrupted 911 service) and they should be strung up if they can be caught. OTOH, I'm sure they could have made the damage much worse had they chosen to do so.

So what can you do? Weld every manhole cover shut? Put concertina wire around every power pylon? Build reinforced concrete bunkers at every pipeline junction? No, it would simply make all of their products unaffordable. Look at what happens to infrastructure in countries where you have a small determined force that tries to disrupt the infrastructure, specifically Nigeria & Iraq.

It's a societal issue IMHO. You have to make it so that it's not worth the risk for someone to intentionally damage the infrastructure. Make the penalty a mandatory 25 year sentence. Plus parents need to do a better job instilling respect for other peoples property. There is no easy fix. There isn't enough money to protect against all the whack jobs. 99.9999% of the people realize enough of this to know they shouldn't go messing around with the infrastructure. But then there's that one person who thinks they can justify it somehow. Do we just chalk it up to acceptable losses and move on? I don't know the answer.

/rant off.

what ring

@sbcglobal.net

AT&T and VZ both bill Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties for 99.999% 911 service levels. Their justification for the high prices is the 911 attachment points are on a fiber RING of fast recovery. What happened to the 5 minute recovery????? Or maybe they don't have / provide the facilities they are billing for.
