In that data, it would be interesting to see how much of the FIOS adds are in areas that overlap with Comcast (or Time Warner Cable), given their policy of bit capping. Customers might be voting with their wallets, even if they have to pay slightly more for FIOS. The northeast is mostly a saturated and locked market.. unless something drastic happens, the customer base (for the most part) isn't shifting one way or another. |

| Verizon proves that fiber to the home pays.
If the incumbent local exchange carriers want to remain relevant they must replace copper with fiber to the home. The Cable Voles keep customers in the dark in the way they use fiber to deliver their signal. The Cable Industry continues to try to mislead customers, that their networks are truly digital. The Cable Industry uses Pulse Frequency Modulation not Asynchronous Transfer Mode or other true digital protocols to deliver their signal. The the only way for the Cable TV Industry and Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers to keep relevant will be to deploy fiber to the home.
Hopefully the efforts of both the Cable Television Industry and Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers, to prevent the implementation of municipal broadband networks, while refusing to serve the customers they find not profitable to serve, will finally initiate a backlash that will result in sanctions against the Voles.
Consider what happened to Time Warner's outrageous plans to charge customers punitive rates when they exceed unreasonably low monthly download allowances (CAPS). It will benefit consumers if the government follows through holding hearings on the efforts of ISP's to limit the amount of data customers can download by initiating punitive overage fees. |

I can't speak for Time Warner Cable, but in my area, Comcast and FiOS are practically the same price for internet, depending on how you translate the cable giant's PowerBoost feature. The 16/2 Blast! service is $52.95, which does not include the modem rental fee. Comcast claims this is up to 20/4 speeds, with PowerBoost used on first 20MB down and 10MB up. FiOS is $54.95 for their 20/5 service, and this includes the router cost.
The FiOS TV service is cheaper, provided you are getting all of the available channels. My Comcast Platinum package was significantly more each month than my current FiOS TV package with all of the premium movie channels. I am not on any special, bundled pricing plans, as I opted for the 50/20 speed tier ($89.95) which cannot be included in a bundled package.
The prices are going to be very competitive in areas where FiOS is located with either Comcast or TWC. When you take into account the savings from bundles in the first year or two, the amount saved is even more.
I have no allegiance to either Verizon or Comcast, and the current architecture makes it real simple for me to switch from one service to the other. |

That's what seems to be drawing most people.
Most people (apart from us technogeeks) don't care about internet speeds or caps. As long as it's above 5Mbps it's fine for most average people. |

| 40% availability
FIOS is at 40% availability. Assuming 13.2 million passed according to this report.
This is assuming 33 million premises with POTS ( »www.tvover.net/2006/09/27/Verizo···ars.aspx ).
1 year ago, in feb 2008, I ( »Re: haha ) calculated it at 28%, 9.3 million passed.
Thats a pretty good jump, they increased availability by %40 of existing availability in one year. %40 is close to the half way point. I dont think we will ever hear any stories about urban cherry picking again, since all urban areas will be covered (excluding MDUs). |

Okay the guys laid the fiber in my neighborhood last November/December, Can we run it to my house already? I know it's VZ's fiber because I saw the contractors and VZ supervisor checking the work being done, but damn I can't tell you how frustrating it is know the fiber is in the ground only a few yards from my house but it's not lit yet. Please hook it up SOON! I want to be a FiOS add! |

When it comes to apartment buildings sometimes the residents have to go to the management or owner to request it. My apartment in Arlingotn, VA has it yet my old apartment just a mile away that had FIOS passing it first does not have it because management has a deal with Comcast and sees no reason to change things. You should go to your resident manager and ask they if they have been approached by Verizon unless of course FIOS is not running past your building yet. |

you know what they say about saying never, right?
people will ALWAYS complain about cherry picking on these forums. they won't stop until they have service X, once they get it, they'll stop complaining. |

I can say that a friend of mine had Comcast for years. I moved a half a block from him and we both had Comcast. When FIOS came, I was having a lot of problems with channels not working or pixelating. He went with FIOS after a door to door salesman came up.
Now, my friend is not technically minded at all and neither is his wife but both of them were commenting on how much better the picture quality was on FIOS over Comcast and they don't even have an HD TV.
That being said, they prefer the On-Demand selection of Comcast.
I love FIOS as their service is much better than Comcast ever was and having their package (1 HD box, 2 digital adapters and 1 Cablecard) is cheaper than Comcast with no boxes and just the locals in HD (which they claimed I shouldn't be getting.) |

The cherry picking complaints have gone down alot on this site. Even most "lets track FIOS construction threads" on »Verizon Fiber Optics have disappeared over the last year or two since most people who are on DSLR and complain have gotten it by now since VZ passed them because they live in decent income urban, or suburban areas. I've never seen threads on DSLR for islands of FIOS in upstate NY, yet its there, the complainer bunch on DSLR is a small crowd and most have been pacified by now. |

I'm happy for you all that have it! Comcast is doing quite well for my needs. Especially since my only other choice is AT&T DSL. -- Think outside the Fox... Opera |

But comcast in our area doesn't come close to the 112+ HD channels that FIOS has. For me with the 50/20 FIOS tier and many more HD channels, there is no way Comcast can compete with FIOS

| Fios TV has been great...
Aside from the "off" remote/box issue, the TV service has been phenomenal. Their SD pic quality blows TWC away (I was watching MLB in SD and my brother thought it was the HD feed).
The Internet speeds are as promised but them preferring to use their router (I know you can use your own but the setup is a pain) is a bit annoying. The phone has been more or less ok but we've had some weird line issues that VZ claims is either faulty jacks and/or a poor phone.
at 95/month you can;t really beat the price/product. I was paying TWC almost 170 a month for crappy TV and 10 down/ less than 1 up internet - I'm paying less for way more - apparently a lot of other people are as well (where available obviously). |

It's not necessarily all bad. Being in close proximity to FiOS does free up some possible congestion in the immediate vicinity, and the fierce local competition ensures that you also see similar price discounts and performance updates as those folks living down the street. |
