 | | I still get them! They haven't tapered off for me. I get the automated messages when I pick up, or parts of a message in voicemail, telling me time and time again that my "car warranty is about to expire," and "this is the final notice before we close to file." That along with all those carpet cleaners promising to clean my carpet for $15. I put EVERY NUMBER I use or own (VOIP, cellphone, Google Voice, landline, etc.) in Do Not Call, but it DOES NO GOOD. How does Do Not Call do any good when these jerks don't even use it and just use auto-dialers?

I like to engage them in conversation, draw it out as long as I can. The less money they make, the better I feel.

 | | I get them at work These idiots call my work number... a number that I have never used as a contact for my car warranty, ever. So it is quite obvious when they call that it is a scam.
The scarier call, however, came a few months back. My wife first called me to tell me that our refrigerator was on the fritz and we needed to buy a new one. Literally 2 seconds after I got off the phone with her, I get a call from one of these places. |
 | | | Re: My warranty is about to Expire I use VOIP as well and use dial plans in mysipswitch.com to route telemarkers and those infamous "unknown" callers to blueface.ie's monkey sounds. (It's funny to look through the call logs--some telemarketers call back 3-4 times after their number's been routed to the monkey sounds; I can only imagine they're wondering what in the world is going on.) I look up any unknown caller and most turn out to be spoofed numbers these bozos are using. If the number's been reported in use by telemarketers it gets routed to the monkeys. I really think there needs to be a federal law prohibiting spoofing and it should carry criminal penalties. | |

They're also particularly resistant at giving out any identifying information, so it's hard to track them. Even if you ask "How's the weather where you are?" they'll hang up.

I think the fine should be at least 100 million dollars, and the money should be divvied up amongst the customers who were inconvenienced and annoyed by these ba$tards.
True story- I once had a telemarketer annoying the crap out of me despite my being on the do not call list. I finally complained to the Pennsylvania attorney general's office about it.
Several months went by, the calls stopped. I forgot about it.
Then one day I got a letter from the PA AG's office. Scared the crap out of me too...
I opened it up, and there was a check for $100 inside. They acted on the complaints from consumers against the company, fined them, then split the proceeds among all those who had filed complaints.
One of the few times I ever saw government really do something right. | |
