F You politicians Minnesota has got bigger freaking problems to worry about gambling online. Funny thing is nobody wants to back a bill to make gambling outside of Indian Casinos.

I'm very shocked that someone in the IT community would be backing a bill to block sites or filter the internet but I guess once you get into politics  things change and you've got to do whatever you can do to stay elected :s
I also left a voice mail for him saying I'd like to discuss his proposal of the bill and why he feels that he should be wasting time on such a frivolous bill instead of woryying about bigger things.

Garofalo is the Republican legislator trying to ban the state from trying to block certain gambling websites- he's not the one behind the attempt to block websites. Perhaps it's not the highest priority bill that'll get passed this year, but it's certainly not the lowest.
It was the (unelected) head of Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement (part of the Division of Public Safety) that came up with this website blocking nonsense. |

The LDS church (Mormons to you) does not affect my surfing at all. Talking to my neighbors, some of them have signed on to an ISP run by the LDS church that does do what you are accusing them of doing, however, and this is a BIG HOWEVER, they choose to do so and are not forced to like you imply (and several have said they like it, others have very mixed opinions). I know you hate the thought that some folks have freedom of choice and can exercise it, but that is one of the concepts that this country SUPPOSEDLY was founded under.
I get all the porn spam I can puke at, as well as the various physical enhancements that only a fool would respond too, and the Win a Million Dollars at an offshore ripoff casino garbage. But then again, I am not on their ISP, I use Xmission, a private firm that lets us decide what filtering to use.
Oh, you did make one statement that has some partial truth...."This is as tedious and stupid", too bad you went off into a stupor at the point instead of making a reasoned argument (of which there are even several easy ones).

I believe he was referring to the general trend of religious people to vote for any politician claiming to write laws banning what they see as "Morally Bankrupt" activities.
These LAWS affect all people in the state/county/country and should not be put into place because some group of people were threatened with an eternity in a dimension of fire if they did not subscribe to a certain belief system think that these activities are "Morally Bankupt"
The stock defense is always that religious people are simply excercising their "free choice" which conveniently always dodges the original problem of the religious groups trying to revoke another persons free choice through legislation. (Think of the children laws) |

Regulating gambling, salt, trans-fats in resturants- it's not just "legislating morality"; it's a nanny-state notion that lawmakers know what's best for us better than we do, and are willing to enforce their judgement on us all at gunpoint.
If it had to do with gambling being considered immoral, I doubt the state would invest so much effort in promoting it's own form of gambling by means of Powerball and scratch-off tickets themselves. |

Let's narrow this a little bit more by saying legalistic religious people want to ban activities they don't agree with.
Depending on how you want to define religious, I could fall into that stereo type. However, I am a true believer that you can't force anyone to be morally right. You can simply teach them the difference between right and wrong and what integrity is and then hope when they stand face to face with the decision they make the right one. No matter what "religion's" version of the Bible you look at, that is the lesson it will teach.
Just like in real life, even on the Internet if someone wants it, they will find a way to get it and there is no way you can stop them. |

Religious nutjobs are almost always the same folks behind filtering anything, especially causes that are considered immoral by certain religious cults entitites. They vote in very large blocs and this in turn spurs any opportunistic douchebag politician to do their bidding. Try reading and using your brain first before you sound off.
