FiOS 50/20 is Cheaper

Just to be clear, in Northern Virginia, the FiOS 50/20 plan is $89.95 bundled with phone service and $94.95 unbundled.

I use SlingBox Pro, and the cable upload is just barely adequate if you have other people sharing the line and using the connection. The upload I had with Comcast was 16/2 with PowerBoost, and that could not handle the SlingBox and allow decent performance for others still at home.

Edit: Attached a screen of the current prices.

Well....

I certainly do not understand why Verizon doesn't offer say 50/20 or 50/50 in these areas for the same price. They certainly have the ability to do so and maybe it would make cocks think a bit more on being a bit more competitive on price :P

I doubt it. Just too high a price. Most people are fine with 20/5 speeds, and apparently with similar performance from their local cable provider, or else there would be a much higher turnover rate for homes passed.

My question is when will we see docsis 3.0 more inner city in virginia. Because hell i would love to see them running more docsis 3.0 modems then the current 1.1 they are running here.

EDIT: Also cox should have a 50/10 plan not just 50/5. hell even add a 30/5 plan in some markets. They would make money. As for the slower uploads in packages, is what i think hurts most, I mean hell why have a only 5mb up on a 50mb down connection? Just silly to me.

Because no vendors have upstream channel bonding working yet with DOCSIS 3.0, so you're still grouping people on a shared 27mbps (minus overhead) upstream connection.

FiOS Wins

With DSLX's announcement of a 50/20 rebranded FiOS tier for $100/month, Cox is already behind unless they can convince sheeple that their PowerBoost tech is worth not only a 75% lower upload speed but also a higher price, expecially once their introductory discount period ends.

Of course, in areas where FiOS/LUS fiber aren't yet Cox will get customers, since 50/5 is still faster than anything xDSL can muster. However if they're competing head-to-head with FiOS, they're already losing.

Additionally, what's with the positively gimpy upload speeds that DOCSIS 3 operators are pushing out, compared with fiber offerings? Sure, 5 Mbps is better than 2 Mbps, but when the second-lowest tier on FiOS has 5 Mbps up and the next tier up is 20 Mbps, At $55 for 20/5 and $60 for 20/20, most people will go for fiber if they know anything. Particularly when you're comparing unthrottled everything with slower transfer speeds on the stuff that actually *needs* 50 Mbps. Seriously, who needs 50 Mbps for web surfing, gaming or even video conferencing? It's all about the high volume data transfers, and I'm betting Cox isn't going to do much to make sure multi-stream HD video works well on their network.

Re: FiOS Wins

Well only a small percent of people have the choice between cable and fios. So alot of people are either stuck with shitty dsl or decent cable still, and it will be awhile before most people even see fios in there area.

Cox, is to busy wasting billions of dollars trying to be a wireless company. If they had invested that money into the cable system....

If I were Verizon then
100/100 89.99
75/75 65.99
50/50 50.00 (just for the fiftys)
30/30 35.99

and I'm sure with this price plan people would be running to get it

you'd have the everyone that could get it getting it and the people that want a ton of bandwidth would pay for the 100/100

They didn't start doing 10mbps until about 5-6 months after they first started deploying the 50mbps service -- it started out as 50/5 service.

I suspect Cox will adjust their tiers, depending on how the utilization shakes out once people start signing up.

They could easily offer 100Mbps for $99 just like Cablevision.

The demand just isn't there yet to make that much of a difference in real numbers. Nobody can see their numbers, but I'm guessing that a few hundred people even bother going with that kind of speed right now....even most heavy users would probably congregate around the 20Mbps and 50Mbps mark.

It is however an important marketing bragging mark, something that's countered just by meeting them at 101Mbps/$99.

Even if that is possible some ISP chose to do asymmetrical for fiber internet such as 5/1, 10/2, 20/3, 40/5, 60/10
Verizon Fios does this crap
In the near future I hope they would offer all symmetric but to conserve bandwidth they will make it asymmetric..
such as 10/10, 25/25, and 75/25

This is a little better but still far from the maximum of 100mbps in both direction at 89.95 a month
50mbps at 49.99
25mbps at 29.99
some would go for 50mbps, some at 25mbps and few at 100mbps

Why have any speed cap at all. What a scam.

100 Megabits per second*

Foreal i see no reason for this kind of speed package for home use, i mean maybe more upload speed say 30/5 or 35/10. But hell only faster download speeds, for more then double the $$ comparedto there 20/3 package. No way would i see paying $140 for only 3/4mb down more per second, and just alittle over 1mb more upload speed. I mean hell you see alot of people seeing 3-5mb upload speeds already in area's.

Well i understand going this route business wise, but as for a person just using it for home usage, i think paying that much would be a waist.
