Comments on news posted 2009-05-07 08:43:10: Back in March, it leaked out that Verizon was working on a new portable 3G Wi-Fi Gateway -- essentially a rebranded version of the Novatel MiFi. Verizon has now officially launched the Verizon MiFi 2200, which costs $100 after a $50 rebate. ..

*Laughs inside*

Yeah, wake me when they have a real neighborhood wireless network that provides unlimited bandwidth (in terms of download/upload bytes) at under $10 a month, then I might get a little worried.

Until then, it's a shame they take advantage of the uninformed masses.

Overage fees.

Does this mean VZW lowered their overage fees outside of this or are overage fees still 25 cents per MB?

I'd be all over this..

...except for the 5G limit.

I'm currently with Alltel and have an unlimited download contract, but that expires in 18 month. Between now and then I'm keeping my ear to the ground for an alternative since FiOS, cable and/or DSL is out of reach because I'm rural. I do, however, have good cell tower access from Verizon and Alltel (sprint still sucks).

If the feds are serious about getting rural broadband, why not a program to give credits to wireless providers to service remote areas with higher caps? Comcast's 250G cap is reasonable, we're not movie downloaders, but we've got two teenagers. 5G is NOT going to cut it.

Has This Been Rolled out Yet?

Just looked on the VerrizonWireless site and did not see it being offered? Is it available now?

Overages

WooHoo! With the overage prices like that, your only looking at $102.4 per GB over your plan's initial monthly charge.

What a deal!

Targeted users.....

This isn't being marketed to torrent user types. I have my home connection for that. Who this will appeal to are users such as myself that would like to have internet access on my ipod touch while I'm on the bus, or train. I would love to have access to websites all the time, and this would be the perfect solution. This is NOT something you would want to use for streaming on a portable device, why would you? You want music? load up a playlist before leaving home. I don't understand, and never will understand people that feel it's their duty to point out the negative in EVERYTHING. This is a great idea, and even at the pricepoint, this has a market. 250mb would be a hell of alot of webpage loading to create overage. Bottom line, if it's used for it's intended purpose, this is a godsend, if used for heavy downloading, then you deserve any overages.

Re: ...?

It creates a personal portable wifi hotspot for use with your portable devices like laptop, ipod, netbook, etc. Not designed for use as your PRIMARY internet connection, simply lets you take it with you. No need to concern yourself with whether or not you can find a public one.

Re: Overages

Not when you compare it to ATT overages. Then it is a bargain.

And why would I want that when I can just tether to my phone? Oh, I forgot, this is Verizon Wireless we are talking about, paying more while getting less.

We need people pointing out the negatives so we know what we get. The marketing team will never allow the vendor to point that out. Of course you should still take all this with a grain of salt and do your own evaluation, but at least you know what to look for.

Day pass?

Do the $15 day passes have unlimited data, or are there overage fees with those as well?

Re: Overages

Sprint's overages are a better bargain at five cents per MB gone over which amounts to only $51.20 per GB. Doing the math, you could get away with 5 GB over on data allowance for just over $250, the same amount as using a GB on VZW.

Verizon's regular overage is 25 cents per MB which is $256 per GB. I wonder why the overage for this is "cheaper"?

even at "only" $102.40 per GB not to mention the 5 GB cap I wonder how verizon gets away with this yet TW gets slammed for wanting to charge $1 per GB over and having a 40 GB cap.

Re: Targeted users.....

That's true, and I agree with you 100%. But people spouting comments like "I run a data server from home, this is overpriced" makes no sense. And yes, that was extreme, but you get my drift. All I'm saying is there's a market for everything, yet some people try to make 20lbs of B.S. fit into a 5lbs bag, and then complain about the poor workmanship of the bag manufacturer. Get a grip people, and compare apples to apples.
