Not surprised

I've had DirecTV for years and I'm very pleased with their service quality. I would refer anyone who is interested (and if you are interested in switching, PM me so we can both get $100 credits

People looking to "upgrade" to digital TV take one look at cable's $100+ offering and horrible customer service reputation and then take a look at DirecTV's $79 deal and excellent CS rep. If DirecTV is an option they usually go with them. Not surprising at all considering the whole digital television hype in the first quarter. The real story is going to be results in the six months after that once the easy adds are gone.

In other news, SiriusXM lost over 400K net subscribers in the first quarter. People continue to evaluate where their money is going every month and whether it is worth it...

Ah yes, programming monopoly with the NFL. What better way to get customers, by telling them that if you want to watch an out of market team, you have to go with DTV, not cable/telco

Or you could just keep cable and pay for PPV like NHL Center Ice to view out of market games. I believe PPV also exists for MLB and Bball. Not sure about NFL, however as I am not a fan.

Re: Price

I dont think satellite has a good CS reputation; but I just dont think its as bad as cable or telcos.

Only problem I have with them? To get the good deals, its contracts; either huge deposit, credit card on file, or ETFs

I have had nothing but good meetings with CS with DirecTV. Always courteous and helpful in the 4 years I have had service.

only one apparently

I guess I'm the only one apparently that doesn't see a bright future for wireless cable tv providers...oops i mean satellite providers.
Short term 3, maybe 5 years, they may do ok. Long term 5+ years they'll get squeezed.

What they are saying is that the NFL's version of NHL Center Ice, known as Sunday Ticket, is exclusive to DirecTV. So if you want to watch out of market games, you have to subscribe to DirecTV as the others do not offer it.

Is Craig Moffet retarded?

How can a senior stock market analyst NOT KNOW that At&t and Verizon already have their own form of tv broadcasting? (IPTV)

Did this guy graduate high school? Why the fuck are companies hiring retards?

I have to disagree with this one.

DirecTV has always been ahead of the curve with digital TV. I don't see them going away any time soon. Their picture quality is the best out there (I have not seen FiOS or U-Verse yet) but they have built a very strong customer base.

I am very pleased and wouldn't consider switching to anyone else.

I agree. When UVerse has enough homes passed, ATT will have no reason to stay with direct TV. And, as broadband becomes more and more prominent, people will be looking to bundle; and as far as I know, DTV has no plans for internet access. They will also eventually run out of bandwidth when 3DTV rolls around.

I had DTV here once, the picture quality was great when it worked. I didnt have a perfect view to the southern sky though, and would often lose picture in rain, wind, and snow.

Re: Price

DirecTV has a very good CS reputation. They usually come out on top of those surveys. My experience confirms that too. They installed in January on the day promised and arrived within 10 minutes of the start of the appointment window. The two guys worked outside in 10°F weather and got it done right the first time in a little over an hour. The one time I've had to call I was on with a live CSR in less than a minute, and she dealt with my concern immediately (a receiver gone bad).

I have no problem with a 1 year contract since I'm not bouncing around between providers every month, and the $50/mo we're saving over Comcast is very nice.

Re: only one apparently

ATT will never have "enough homes passed".

3DTV is a nice tech demo but the money necessary to implement even a basic system is not there. I've seen the prototypes going back to the early 90's and the general market will never embrace it.

Never? I remember hearing that argument about tons of things we use today.

Never is too harsh a word. How about 'not in at least 5-10 years'?

Like I said, not a fan of the NFL so I don't really care. With very few and very limited exception, however, satellite v. cable differences aren't very meaningful or significant. Case in point: Sunday Ticket. Take it up with your cable co. if you want it to be offered.

 DirecTV future not all bright

I read some other news items that paint a less glowing appraisal of the 1st qtr results. They did add a lot of subscribers, but at the high cost of a 47% drop in profits year over year. And they are in the midst of a reorg with Liberty Media Corp(John Malone) to form a new corporate entity - an entity that will also own Sirius/XM.

So, DirecTV will be spun off from Liberty Media and form it's own company and stock. So what you may be seeing is a new entity with $2 billion in debt that Malone is sending along with his stepchild. »online.wsj.com/article/SB1241439···073.html And the big push in 1st qtr new subscribers is to put a nice coat of paint on the old car.

Cable guy that has Directv

Directv subscriber for last 7 years due to the area I live is not cable serviceable and I have no complaints. DTV is very good service and even though I get about 10 Dish offers a month in the mail for half what I pay DTV, I would not consider switching. Yep if it pours cats and dog, the service goes out but it comes right back once downpour is over.
