Comments on news posted 2009-05-08 16:49:03: To gain approval for their acquisition of Alltel, Verizon was forced by the FCC to divest a number of Alltel markets by May 9, in order to maintain something vaguely resembling competition in the mobile market. ..

out of the frying pan..

from one monopoly into another..

we all suppose that some commitments will come for bringing 100% of these 85 markets into the U-Verse deployments too, right? (and if you believe that... take a look at my little bridge I wanna sell ya)

at&t isn't doing that well with even the FTTP deployments they have now, much less crappy fttn/c they push with adsl plus. no 100mbit tiers announced... nothing. they even backed away from $15 dsl until all of bellsouth was wired... oh well for best of intentions..

Oh God NO!!

Please say this isn't so! it's funny I see this on the outside before hearing about it internally actually that bothers me. there isn't a peep anywhere about this on the inside.

What is AT&T buying?

I'm not getting this. Alltel uses CDMA/EVDO and AT&T uses GSM/HSPA. So I don't understand what it would mean for AT&T to buy customers and tower electronics. What are they buying exactly? Towers? Frequencies?

Customer accounts using CDMA cellphones. And then AT&T will commence a cutover process to get these customers on to their existing towers in the area and using GSM phones.

This is the same thing that Verizon did when they purchased Unicel last year...interestingly enough..the cutover for that was this week..but anyways....Unicel was primarily a GSM based carrier in more rural areas. Verizon as you know is CDMA. Verizon is holding on to the GSM equipment for roaming revenue. They have equipped all former Unicel customers with new CDMA handsets. I assume AT&T will keep the Alltel network around for this purpose as well..We'll see though.

Don't forget... Alltel also ran a GSM network for AT&T/T-Mobile roaming from its Western Wireless days. This would be good for AT&T to get off of roaming... bad for T-Mobile. T-Mo does have a lot of AWS spectrum though.

Not really a monopoly if there are two

What do wireless service areas have to do with wireline service areas?

My question is...

How many of you that constantly bicker about AT&T Wireless Service have actually had it?

Re: Oh God NO!!

inside would have not have been certain till Wall street knows buddy. They bankroll everything so there's no way the trustees would have been certain till everything was signed and Wall street approved it. We'll know if i still have a job soon

Ohio Market Overlays

The Ohio Market of Alltel has ATT already there. This would do nothing really but have the same problem Alltel & VZW had to start off with.

ATT should NOT be allowed to pick up ANY areas where they already service.

Re: What is AT&T buying?

ATT will. They'll have to collect that extra money from VZW and Sprint for roaming.

But Verizon should be allowed to add Alltel areas where it already has service?

Actually yes due to many of the areas are rural of Alltel.

ATT got to the size they are by buyouts like this that keep getting out of hand.

ATT should not be able to buy up the rural coverage areas and price gouge the hell out of the customers they do on landline services.
