| 300 bucks... Why would they want to discourage anybody from getting the service? That sounds dumb.
I'm getting it. CV's sales people are overwhelmed with requests for it. I spent 20 minutes on hold for the sales department. I called on the 11th, and couldn't get an appointment until the 21st. Also, they said it takes 3-4 hours for the install. Most full new installs take an hour at the most.
So I guess that "people don't want it and won't get it because of the 300 bucks" is just limited to a few nerds who won't pay for anything.

Why three hours? I would think it is a modem swapout and provisioning on thier end? Interesting..Fios took about 5 here. Add a 1 for the fiber drop to my house 2 days prior. Lee

Probably not 3-4 hours. They're probably just allowing that much for it.

| OOL Ultra install process Here is the bottom line to this new service install process:
If you have the triple package already, your Ultra setup will require the setup of an additional (DOCSIS 3.0) modem, which then become your source for internet access. The original modem will maintain the VOIP connection for your (2) phone lines.
So what the tech has to do is to set the new modem up and reset the old modem for VOIP only and make a line test. Then the internet access has to be tested as well as speed. In terms of "back-office" setup that has already been done at the point of setting up the appointment, so it will be ready for the tech visit.
That will not take 4 hours to do! Even 2 hours is overkill (Unless major problems occur!)
Now, if you do not have any services from CV, obviously then it becomes a completely different story, as the tech now has to run cables, set the tv, internet and phone services up. Test the system and verify speed and quality of the install. Then 4 - 5 hours may do it, but with problems maybe not.
Now, with regard to the $300 fee, yes its steep, but here is a little unscientific calculation:
Hardware DOCSIS 3.0 Modem will probably run them in bulk $65 per unit.
Backend DOCSIS 3.0 Head-end installed per segment that the service has to cover (not cheap), up front cost participation per account serviced $120
Backend setup cost $35 per account and general provisioning cost $35.
Comes to a total of $255 in cost, which CV has chosen not to absorb, possibly to curb demand, but also understand that FIOS is NOT available everywhere within the CV service area. Mainly because local communities are not interested or drag out negotiations for the necessary franchise agreements (tax) that must be in place before a FIOS roll out can happen. So, CV will charge for a new premium service, until competition arrives.
This calculation has NOT taken into account all the secondary cost involved with getting this service to your doorstep, and again is not factual just based on my own analysis of this technology and the infrastructure needed to support it.
I have an appointment for next week so I'll let you know how the service pan's out. One thing is for sure when you introduce fees like this -- it better work accordingly!
