Get them ready....

Slingbox needs to have their lawyers warmed up and ready because if AT&T releases an app that does what Sling wanted to do and it is not crippled and banished to WiFi only they should have their day in court.

If this is true, then regardless of network speed, they are impeding technology because it will compete with them.

$30? Echostar can eat dookie

Why so much when the PC and Mac app is free? We already bought the hardware. The app should be free just like their PC and Mac clients are. Having more clients pays for itself in more hardware sales.

IMo: all new phones exceed the cell networks in one way or other. Why they cripple them so much.

Re: Is that even legal?

I think its going to be a grey area.

Wireless - so far, has been able to successfully ban many apps through their ToS.

I don't see people running BitTorrent over 3G, VoIP applications have been banned, even if they actually work.
Unlike landlines, there is a limit of capacity, and there is competition.

There's a few options:

1. Find a better carrier
2. Deal with it
3. Have companies like AT&T remove their walled garden approach (which will only lead to caps on handhelds)

If Sling created/allowed the App for the iPhone, then they know its going to be used on WiFi only.

Windows mobile wins again

1 WM users, 0 iPhone users.

And yet again we see that iPhone users are getting the shaft because someone up high believes you should use your device differently. Wake up Apple fan boys, if I bought a piece of electronic device and was told I can only use it in a certain way I would be pissed. All Apple fan boys are just sheep, following what Steve Jobs tells them they should buy and how to use it.

I am unsure if WM has a similar app (I am sure it does, at least with orb you can stream videos from your computer), the WM OS will NEVER have this restriction because Microsoft doesn't answer to the greedy cell phone providers. Microsoft makes the OS, which in turn hands it over to the manufacturers, which then turn to the provider and ask how it should be configured. There is NO way to prevent me from using certain applications on my WM phone to only use wifi (or similar restrictions). This restriction would have to be done on AT&T's network (or asked by AT&T to the software maker, which the software maker can just say "screw you, pay me $$$" and AT&T can't do anything about it), not on my device....which means if they start to do that then I can easily say "f(&# you AT&T" and goto another provider. The same principle also applies to the G1. You would think a higher priced phone like the iPhone would give users more freedom on how they would use their device.

Expensive!

I'd heard the rumors that ATT & Apple were going to shelve this until the next iPhone hardware rev so this is a nice surprise, but $30 is a little steep.

I figured it would be locked to WiFi only in any case as ATT's network seems to have enough trouble with streaming audio (in my locale).

AT&T can claim the fastest 3G network as you are pretty much banned from doing anything on it!

what about other carriers?

I am just upset about this beacuse what about Canadian Users.. what if Rogers doesn't mind this app being on their network why does ATT get to pull all the god damn strings?

thats what really pisses me off..

It's $30 because they know thousands of iPhone junkies will bend over and pay it...

Anti mobile sling

Who would want to pay 30 dollars to use a program that drains their battery life? Slingplayer is free for desktops.

Isn't it Apple and not AT&T who is responsible for app store approvals?

Presumably because they are a for-profit company and would like to make money for their share holders.

RE

Actually I agree with it being WI-FI only. I can see some asshole trying to do something with the SlingBox over the regular app, over the 3G network or roaming, and then when the bill arrives for how many thousands of dollars, them calling outraged. Probably better this way, besides, we don't need everyone with an iPhone doing Bittorent, VOIP, or Slingbox on the network anyway. The iPhone is the reason the network does not perform already. You will see the same issue when the Verizon version gets on Verizon's network.

Re: Windows mobile wins again

I use ORB www.orb.com to stream ALL my music/video and even cable TV to my phone (any device with a web browser). The software is free, runs on my HTPC with TV card, and my 20/month unlimited data on my Sprint phone covers it.

It's the same price that the Windows Mobile app has always been.

I'm off to go watch my Slingbox on my Touch Pro while using the cellular network and not WiFi.

Add this to the many reasons on why I think the iphone sucks.

true but it's a bad excuse since a company should be able to handle all that load.
