But will it be real Cisco gear? or knockoffs?

An unclassified government PowerPoint presentation documenting Chinese counterfeiting of Cisco routers has been published on the net.

Agreed. A quick look of their forum here makes a person think twice about trying it. I would be more inclined to tell someone to goto an unlimited plan if they have a phone that can tether with 3G. From the looks of their caps and what not, it would be on par with what they offer..

That's ClearWire, operating on outdated equipment. From all I'm hearing Clear WiMAX is much, MUCH better. DSL-like speeds for DSL-like prices, except wirelesly.

I guess we can only hope. More competition = lower prices for all. But with what they currently have, it seems to be in pretty sad shape considering all the money companies have put into it.

Re: But will it be real Cisco gear? or knockoffs?

nothing like a little fud to get your wednesday rolling.
looking at the sheer size and ambition that "clear" is wanting to push with their wimax service, one could only guess that they are dealing directly with cisco (i'm not aware of them contacting my company for anything). when you work directly with cisco, you get cisco gear directly. even with some of the larger channel partners (ala att, etc) go through cisco ordering and punchout tools.
the issue that TK Junk Mail TKJunkMail See Profile brings up deals with broken government procurement practices and incomplete vetting of organizations selling cisco gear.

cisco is putting some money on this thinking it will work, especially with that vapor-ware product known as lte not showing up yet. if clear can get their act together, cisco stands to gain quite a bit of share with this (as well as name recognition). overall, it sounds like it could help clear with the boost they need to get them off the ground...

Re: Service offerings

when you speak of Clearwire, I'm assuming that you're NOT talking about Clearwire WiMAX right?

I'm over in Buffalo and would just love to test their WiMax.

I believe its Wimax since they want a proprietary card and its not capped. Go to clearwire.com and click on the coverage map for NY. Shows Auburn, Syracuse and Cortland.

The salesguy said the coverage sucks

Its not WiMax service. The Clearwire WiMax service is on www.clear.com, not their clearwire.com page. The WiMax is only commercially available in Baltimore and Portland at this point.

Specifically, Clearwire offers true mobile WiMAX in Baltimore/Portland/Atlanta only at the moment. They have a pre-WiMAX flavor, which sucks, in many small markets. Will take time to upgrade those markets to true mobile WiMAX.

Chicago/Dallas/Philly and I think Boston have some unofficial true WiMAX coverage not officially released yet.
