No Surprise

Verizon is slowing the deployment so they spend the least amount before Frontier takes over.

Problem is users not signing up - so build-out slows

»gadgetress.freedomblogging.com/2···l/13677/
Verizon confirmed today that it has slowed expansion of its much sought-after FiOS TV service in Southern California to focus on adding customers where service is already available.

“We’re still doing construction right now. But in the first four to five years, we were going at a very high rate to pass 1 million homes. In the first half of this year, we’ve slowed down the build,” he said.

He expects FiOS to get back on its scheduled rollout in the second half of this year. But he couldn’t say whether that move could once again be deferred if FiOS doesn’t sign up enough customers between now and then.
They are running Fios to a lot of areas and those areas aren't signing up at a high enough rate to justify the continued investment. So they will try to get the rate of signup higher in proportion to the number of houses passed. You can't keep building out new areas if you aren't covering the costs for the areas already built.

This area is unaffected by the divestiture to Frontier Communications.

California economy is hurting + many foreclosures

I don't think VZ will be in a rush to deploy into areas that are being foreclosed.

FEMA money is being used to repair a horse trail ...

"Due to the storms that occurred in December 2004 and January 2005 portions of the City's hiking/equestrian trails were damaged. The City of Walnut had been approved to receive approximately $147,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in reimbursement for repairs to these public improvements. The City of Walnut appropriated $127,000 for the repair of the hiking/equestrian trails damaged during these storms."

Yeah, so what's the remaining $20K used for, that's what I want to know!

I would guess the collapse of the economy factors into people not signing up for FIOS in California as Verizon had hoped.

The cable and phone companies now operate under a statewide franchise with CA. The local control was taken away a couple years ago when the Legislature changed the law to allow AT&T/Verizon to offer TV service. So there is now no requirement that a company (either cable or phone) offer service to all the residents and companies within their footprint anymore.

Oh wells, I wasn't expecting Verizon to come out to Burbank area anyway. I am happy with Time Warner cable, though I do wish I had fios.

Anyone familiar with where Verizon has deployed here in California knows that VZ isn't redlining. Some of the poorest service areas were the first to get FiOS (eg Beaumont, Lake Elsinore etc).

Southern California is doing very well FiOS-wise

We've seen very widespread FiOS deployment, even to more remote communities. I'm not surprised at all that the area served my the Register newspaper is seeing slowing deployment...there is little Verizon service area left that doesn't already have FiOS.

But I'm not surprised that they are focusing on marketing. Particularly with HSI, Verizon has already taken a number substantial price increases (at least here in Huntington Beach) while major competitors Comcast and Time Warner hiked speeds, expanded HDTV and pushed aggressive triple play deals.

The downturn has hurt Calif more than most areas, so your assumption in most likely valid.

customers

I bet they are waiting for the charter mess to blow over and see how many more customers they get from it. A big chunk around me is charter/fios. And a big chuck of people have fios internet but not tv as tv was not offered in the beginning.

I dont even think Verizon's footprint is that big in California. Only market they have is what they took over from the GTE merger years ago. Which was a lot of small chunks here and there.

Not suprised

I am in the part of Whittier that doesn't have FIOS only Charter Communications and Verizon DSL. It dosnt surprise me cause this area sucks anyways.

Re: Southern California is doing very well FiOS-wise

For whatever it's worth, Verizon's Fios deployment in its service territory within the city of Los Angeles, such as Brentwood, Westwood, Pacific Palisades, the north San Fernando Valley (San Fernando, Mission Hills, Granada Hills, Sylmar, etc.) has all been but non-existent. So much for the statewide franchise agreement.

I'm still shocked that even in high-end Pacific Palisades, much of the west end of community only has access to DSL speeds of up to 1.5 mb down, and no Fastpath.

Yes, Time-Warner and Charter (Charter serves a very small portion of Los Angeles adjacent to Pacific Palisades that's part of their Malibu system) at least both offer higher speed options to Palisades residents.

I know this as one of my relatives lives in the Palisades and I experience her slow DSL speeds when I deadhead there for my trips.

True, we have an economic downturn, yet in the Pacific Palisades, the downturn is not as severe as in the Inland Empire. Even Orange County is holding up reasonably well.
