Comments on news posted 2009-05-27 09:15:51: Over the last few years, Australian lawmakers have been enamored with the idea of Internet filters, spending almost a hundred million on filtering technology that a teenager was able to circumnavigate in just a few minutes. ..

DNS based

Why dont ISP just offer it as a service, where you get a different DNS plan depending on what you want ? This should be a normal thing they offer. They could ever farm it out.

Silly pragmatist. If filtering was a commodity that anyone wanted to buy, it would not satisfy the moral outrage of the religious nutjobs who want to impose their world views on everyone else.

Last time I checked there wasn't a movement by any college profs to filter the Internet. Keep it on topic.

Thou Shalt Not Offend

Religion is one of the most offensive subjects that can be found on the internet. Make sure that sites providing religious material, of any denomination, are also put high on the list to be filtered.

Exactly--- that's the issue. People believe it's "wrong" and they don't want to see it or face temptation from it. They want it gone.... but not just for themselves---- they don't want ANYBODY to be allowed to see or read / use things they object too.

In the US and EU, you can already do this by using the OpenDNS service. I am sure a service could be setup in Australia to do the same thing.

OpenDNS blocking options:

Strictest category(High):
* Adware
Sites that distribute applications which display advertisements without user's knowledge or choice. Does NOT include sites which serve advertising.
* Alcohol
Sites about alcohol use, commercial and otherwise.
* Chat
Sites where you can chat in real-time with groups of people. Includes IRC.
* Classifieds
Sites for buying and selling (or bartering) goods and services.
* Dating
Sites for meeting other people.
* Drugs
Sites about illegal or recreational drug use.
* File storage
Sites that offer space for hosting, sharing and backup of digital files.
* Gambling
Sites that offer gambling or information about gambling.
* Games
Sites that offer game play and information about games (news, tips, cheat codes).
* Hate/Discrimination
Sites that promote intolerance based on gender, age, race, nationality, religion, sexual orientation or other group identities.
* Instant messaging
Sites that offer access or software to communicate in real-time with other individuals.
* P2P/File sharing
Sites that facilitate the sharing of digital files between individuals, especially via peer-to-peer software, including torrent sites.
* Social networking
Sites that promote interaction and networking between people.
* Video sharing
Sites for sharing video content.
* Visual search engines
Sites for searching for images based on keywords.
* Weapons
Sites about weapons, commercial and otherwise.
* Webmail
Sites that offer the ability to send or receive email.
* Photo sharing
Sites for sharing photographs, as individual images, galleries and albums.
* Adult Themes
Sites that are adult in nature and are not defined in other rating categories. Note: This category should only be turned on if you want to be very restrictive on your network.
* Tasteless
Sites that contain information on such subjects as mutilation, torture, horror, or the grotesque.
* Lingerie/Bikini
Sites displaying or dedicated to lingerie/bikini that could be considered adult-only.
* Proxy/Anonymizer
Sites providing proxy bypass information or services. Also, sites that allow the user to surf the net anonymously, including sites that allow the user to send anonymous emails.
* Sexuality
Sites that provide information, images or implications of bondage, sadism, masochism, fetish, beating, body piercing or self-mutilation.
* Nudity
Sites that provide images or representations of nudity.
* Pornography
Anything relating to pornography, including mild depiction, soft pornography or hard-core pornography.
* Forums/Message boards
Sites with discussions, including bulletin boards, message boards and forums.
* Phishing Protection
By enabling phishing protection, you'll protect everyone on your network from known phishing sites using the best data available.

Re: Thou Shalt Not Offend

Except if you a University of Chicago student using facebook.

»www.thefire.org/index.php/article/10573.html

The Philadelphia-based Foundation for Individual Rights in Education compained about the incident in February, says Adam Kissel, a director at the group.

"The University of Chicago is claiming the power to censor off-campus, disrespectful, allegedly disrespectful speech," Kissel says.

The incident began in January, when a U of C student posted a photo album on Facebook naming his ex-girlfriend in the title and exclaiming "(she) cheated on me, and you're next," says Kissel.

The album included pictures of his ex-girlfriend, along with photos of the male student with several other people.

The male student's friends started commenting on the album. Two of them called the woman, whose name has not been released, a "whore."

The university got involved when the woman complained to the dean of students and said she felt libeled, Kissel says.

The U of C asked the male student to remove remove his girlfriend's name and picture from the Facebook page or face possible disciplinary action, Kissel says.

Too funny

I too am a OpenDNS user and I was showing it to a colleague the other day and he too noticed that I was only blocking the phishing, Hate/Discrimination, and RELIGION.

So he asked "why religion?" and I could only reply... "to each his own". I don't like to offend the religious folks as I think you should be able to do whatever the hell you want in life.

I just wish the religious people felt the same way. However they usually like to tell me that I am "going to hell someday."

It is a little irritating though when they keep telling me that and all I ever tell the religious types is "have a great day."

That's dumb if it wasn't for religion they wouldn't be religious and thus wouldn't be full of shit.

How many people were executed OFFCIALLY by the Catholic Church of the centuries? MILLIONS. Is that not religion not religious people. Funny how you same people don't mind blaming Islam( a religion ) and not the fundamentalist( a religious person ) for violence in the middle east and terrorist acts. I always get a laugh when people twist facts to form their version of the truth not matter how contridictory, illogical and hypocritical it is.

He's doing it on his own computer so WTF do you care what he blocks? That's the whole point. Filtering should be done by the INDIVIDUAL not the ISP. This cerap hads nothing to do with protecting children from porn. That's the parents job anyways. It had to do with preventing adults from accessing porn because believe me if the Jesus freaks could get their way porn would be banned form the internet even for grown ups. Sorry I'm over 18, I pay my taxes adn I can die for my country so I don't need and didn't ask you to save my soul.

Yeah right, but I don't have to fuckin follow some asshole code as a matter of fuckin law do I?

If these jerk offs can't keep a leash on their fuckin rug rats, and behave like responsible parents, perhaps they should be charged with child neglect, and have their offspring housed in a fudi home for wayward kids.

Jesus fucking christ! Didn't know Australia had so many of these moronic religious fundies. Why don't they simply burn their computers along with their list of banned books and leave the rest of the population alone? At least Australia won't allow them to burn people, although give em time, and they may demand that "right" too. Disgusting whores!

Correct! Seems these idiots want the state to take responsibility for what is THEIR job. It's called irresponsible. Jesus ain't come yet folks, don't try to make the government into the kingdom of god OK? Of course there ain't no fuckin god, but what the hell, they are free to believe their delusions if they choose, just DON'T TREAD ON ME. Keep your religious perversions, along with your sexual perversions behind closed doors, and we will all be happy.
