Those are some major upgrades. Damn. I wonder if even 20% of the customers will be able to get anything near those speeds -- The Internet is about to go down....it is actually. |

I noticed that they did some upgrades on my drive home. I get a 3G signal all the way from Providence to the Connecticut border. Hopefully they keep pushing the few extra miles into my area. |

Over the past month I've had days where my signal goes down to 1 bar, but then at night back up to full. For the past week or so it's been full bars and the 3G has been much faster, I'm averaging 1.3Mbps on my iPhone. It's been so speedy I've left WiFi turned off to conserve battery. |

But it does look like AT&T fares well in the testing endgadget did. »www.engadget.com/2009/05/26/enga···america/
To check download, upload and latency measurements, we used DSLReports' Flash 8 speed test, which has become somewhat of an unofficial standard over the years. We tested six separate locations a half dozen times, throwing out the outliers and coming up with an average that we felt was truly representative of our experience.

I read that yesterday as well and I wasn't surprised that Verizon finished last. I was surprised that they were so close to Sprint though ... my Verizon EVDO connection felt absolutely GLACIAL compared to my Sprint EVDO card. Although my speed test and latency results frequently matched what they reported, there was a definitely perceived difference in speed, although I was never able to put my finger on what it was. |

| What about phone quality?
Here we go again.....
All these data upgrades are great, but when will I be able to make a phone call, and have a conversation with out it failing first and then dropping a few seconds into the call? I would rather have quality phone service rather than high data speeds right now!
I guess I should just stick to emailing rather than phone calls! Who really uses phones to make phone calls anymore?? Right? -- Women think they are clever just because they can fake an orgasm for a relationship, whats the big deal a man can fake a whole relationship for an orgasm!!!! |

Now maybe my iPhone 3G will be able to get some decent download speeds instead of the usual 500k-1mbps that I get in parts of my area these days since it's capable of the full 7.2Mbps HSDPA.

Right? Remember, AT&T uses the 3G network for voice calls too. The 3G coverage improvements ought to help your voice reliability. The 3G network around me has improved quite a bit over the last year or two, and the call consistency has improved along with it. -- AT&T U-Hearse Your funeral. Delivered.

| Backhaul
The big question is if they'll provide enough backhaul to each site. That is the biggest challenge for all 3G/4G carriers.
My guess is that ATT will have very few sites with enough backhaul to provide 3+Mbps for every users. They'll milk the marketing though that the devices are 'capable' of 7Mbps. |

Biggest problem with most evaluations is that they don't test across the country with thousands of users. Dslreports.com has a great archive of users across the country. Looks like Sprint leads for cellphones..

Here are laptop card results... Speed Test Statistics - dslreports.com
Samples Down Upload 113 747 369 Sprint Mobile Broadband: 105 727 353 Verizon Wireless 28 622 374 Cingular: US mobile provider (ATT)
These results change all the time though. No provider consistently leads and all are sometimes on top. Wireless data is fickle.
ATT also misleads with their map. They show 2g/3g coverage combined. They have much less national 3G coverage than Sprint/Verizon. |

1 edit | reply to xenophon I'll agree with you on that there is no provider will consistently lead in every market across the country.
AT&T's 3g map shows 3g vs. 2g - but they do have less national 3G coverage than Sprint and Verizon, but more than T-Mobile.
Both Sprint and AT&T are pretty decent where I am in SoCal. I've 'peaked' out at ~1.2Mbps on Treo 800w (EVDO Rev A). I haven't used data in months on HTC Tilt, as work pays for the Treo. |
