Conservatives raced toward victory in some of Europe's largest economies Sunday as initial results and exit polls showed voters punishing left-leaning parties in European parliament elections in France, Germany and elsewhere.
Some right-leaning parties said the results vindicated their reluctance to spend more on company bailouts and fiscal stimulus amid the global economic crisis.
In the Netherlands, Geert Wilders' anti-Islamic party took 17 percent of the country's votes, taking four of 25 seats.
First projections by the European Union showed center-right parties would have the most seats - between 263 and 273 - in the 736-member parliament. Center-left parties were expected to get between 155 to 165 seats.
Graham Watson, leader of the EU's center-right Liberal Democrat grouping, said early results suggested a rejection of the Socialist approach.
"People don't want a return to socialism and that's why the majority here will be a center-right majority," he said. A couple more years of Obama & his socialists will wise up the U.S. electorate before the next Presidential election.

I don't agree with either "side". I want a third, fourth, or fifth side that matches what I believe... | |

That'll never happen as long as we have a general election without runoffs. Our primary/general election guarantees a two-party system. Too many people will be (rightfully) afraid to vote their conscience for fear of the "greater of two evils" being elected.
It's a cause-and-effect problem. With only a few whack jobs "voting their conscience," it guarantees that only a few whack jobs run as third-party candidates.
It's a sad commentary that our system is validated out of fear.
An easy way to have multiple parties without the expense of runoff elections would be to use tier-ranked ballots. You could indicate your 1st, 2nd, etc. choice. The ballot could be tabulated to count your 1st choice. If that candidate didn't win, count your 2nd choice. Etc.
That would be nice because people wouldn't have a fear of "throwing their vote away." We could get an accurate picture of third-party popularity (which might prove some parties aren't popular even without barriers).
But, it's questionable whether the electorate could comprehend that kind of ballot when they can't even punch out a perforated hole.
