The system is already open, just only a few are making boxes

The system is already open to using other boxes. There is nothing stopping Sony, Panasonic, WalMart, etc. from making digital cable boxes, and selling them. They aren't selling them because there just isn't much market demand.

Most people I know, would rather pay $5/mo for their cable box, and not have to worry about it breaking, as opposed to paying $200 and getting something with a 90 day or 1 year warranty.

The funny thing is people like to pick on the cable companies about their system, which is open to third party box makers. Yet, they don't make much of an issue over satellite which has no box choices.

no one forced people to not use cable cards, TV companies stopped making compatible ports cable cards are dying out.

companies like General instruments and motorlla and pace make cable boxes for the companies.

and no one complains about satalite TV because they aren't regulated as a cable provider from the FCC.

TiVo is great but with the digital conversion coming up unless you have a series 3 you're screwed. unless your cable comapny is continuing to provide local channels or limited basic channel lines ups on analog frequencies.
