"Telocity and MegaPath have sent information about the transition to residential customers and have posted details online at"
At this time there is nothing on any of the three companies web sites. Nor have I received a notice from PhoenixDSL or any of the others yet. Has any one gotten an e-mail on this???

Wanted to clarify that transition information was sent via regular mail, not e-mail, and should begin showing up in customers' mailboxes today and tomorrow. Separately, we're working on all 3 sites, and content should be up shortly. |

What will happen to the many IDSL customers? My understanding is that Telocity does not do IDSL.

| What's happening to Rhythms customers?
I called both Telocity (twice) and Megapath and got conflicting information. A Megapath VP says that they are transfering all of their residential lines, including the Rhythms lines, to Telocity and that the performance will remain the same. Both people that I talked to at Telocity said that they are taking over the Northpoint customers only. The Telocity product is grossly inferior to the Phoenix/Rhythms product, it's a lousy 640/90, I for one could never live with that. My Rhythms line is 1600/408, there are a couple of other ISPs that have similiar Rhythms products. It would be nice to know what's really happening here so that we can make other arrangments if that becomes necessary. |

| Telocity takes over Phoenix Residential (really)
Found this on the Phoenix board.Submited by zbrett. www.telocity.com/phoenixdsl/faq.asp Seems to answer most questions. Hope their service is as good as the service I have gotten from Phoenix. (except for almost non existent tech support)

It seems Earthlink might be taking over the Rythyms portion. See the list of failing ISP's provided by DSL Reports where it indicates this. http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/820 |

Anon | Should we give them a chance?
After six months of service but NO TECH SUPPORT at all, is it worth it to switch providers now? According to the Telocity FAQ site, we have until 12/29 to cancel any contract with Phoenix with no obligation. I signed a two year contract and I really can't complain about the service, but I still don't have an e-mail address! Is that so much to ask for? Forget about tech support, its useless. Telocity also mentioned that we would receive 5 e-mail addresses, a static IP address and some other cool stuff. I would appreciate anyone's thoughts. Thanks. |

| Took me three weeks and several e-mails to Phoenix to finally get an e-maill address. Had thought of switching services. But after reading Telocities faq page and receiving an e-mail from Phoenix (regarding my first post) I think I'll stay and see what develops. At least with a month to month agreement it will not be that difficult to switch later if they don't deliver.

| Ain't this a fine kick in the pants!
I just opened the letter; for all intents and purposes this amounts to a 25% price increase (going from $39.95/month with Phoenix to $49.95/month with Telocity.) If I don't like it, according to the letter, "your PhoenixDSL termination fee will continue to apply if you disconnect service."
After visiting the Telocity FAQ, it looks like the fee would only apply if I cancel before the end of this month. After that, Telocity's month-to-month service would begin. I'm not particularly thrilled over the price increase, especially since I'm now in the 48th hour of an outage (phoenixdsl.net ticket #5315 if anyone from Phoenix is monitoring and still gives a hoot.)
I hear Road Runner is coming to my area within a month with free installation and a $39.95 monthly fee that includes modem rental. The Telocity rep wouldn't budge on their $49.95 monthly fee. Maybe they'll just be an interim solution.

And what about those customers like myself who have a "dedicated DSL line" and no phone service with the local phone company. (I am served via Rythms) I have my local phone service with the cable company, and choose not to use their cable modem service. Will Teleocity continue to serve dedicated DSL lines? For those that do not understand what I mean, dedicated means that the service come on its own line. Telocity brings it on the same line you talk on from the phone company. Or, how about this senario, my neighbor has a roommate, and he has Pheonix (again comes on a dedicated line) and my neighbor also has telocity on his phone line. They can't put both on one line, so what's next? |

I don't think anything in article 820 indicates Earthlink would take Rhythms residential off Phoenix.. certainly if there is lemme know because it was not intended. |

And what about those of us who were billed for the month of January... will that be refunded? (My CC wasn't actually billed yet but the email said for Nov, Dec, & Jan.) |

Earthlink and Telocity were once both listed as possibles. I think that's what he was referring too. |

From http://www.telocity.com/phoenixdsl/faq.asp:
"A. If you are receiving IDSL service, you will keep your current modem. However, you will receive detailed information on switching your email and domain names. "
So I guess we IDSLers are covered (but no "Velocity Gateway" thingie, boohoo)
"Effective December 30, 2000 you will be relieved of any contractual obligations with PhoenixDSL. Telocity offers their service on a month-to-month basis. No contract will be required...Your monthly service charge will be consistent with the pricing for other Telocity customers in your region. "
As an IDSL customer in a Qwest region, under contract at 69.95/month for 2 years, I couldn't be more pleased with these developments... |

| no more true SDSL speeds?
According to the telocity website (»www.telocity.com/products/value.asp):
In your area, downloads can be as fast as 784 Kbps, or up to 27 times faster than a 28K modem dial-up connection. Most pages will appear in a flash, and a large file that used to take minutes to download over dial-up will arrive in seconds. Upload speed, which is what you do when you send email, is as fast as 392 Kbps. (Normally with SDSL, upload and download speeds are the same, but we optimize download speed to be faster because that's what you do most often.)
Of course, this does not make me happy. First, I find out that I have to pay $10 more a month. Then, I find out that my 784/784 connection will probably no longer be that, but a 784/392 connection. Do I also have to pay the $24.95 for them to ship me their "Telocity VelocityPort gateway?" And what do I do with the 3Com SDSL bridge that I'm using now?
What is this optimization bs? Aren't the upload and download speeds independent of each other?
Also, I have yet to receive any notification from Telocity or PhoenixDSL, about any of this. This is somewhat distressing, considering that the Telocity website cites a Dec. 29th deadline (only three days from now) for cancelling the automatic switchover.

Telocity bases it's price on the area. Some places are $39.95, some are $49.95.

first, you misquoted the upload speed. It's only 90 kbps not 392. While for most people, this should be okay, for me, it is most definitely not okay. I upload data to clients sites when I work at home and the 90 kbps cap is a serious problem. I also provide content (noncommercial) for a variety of groups in the form of mailing lists w/ a web interface. This is the another reason why the 90 kbps cap doesn't fit.
I can hear the talking heads now yammer about why do I not just get a commercial feed and the answer is "cost". I'm self-employed and I can justify almost $600-$900 per year cost for a 408/768 ADSL connection but I can't justify $1600 to $2300 per year for a similar (albeit slower) service.
what really annoys me most is all of the crap they pile onto these service offerings to justify higher prices. I just need a reliable pipe with a static IP address. I don't need Web hosting, multiple mailboxes, VPNs, managed firewall services or any of that crap. The only time I ever call technical support is when the pipe breaks and that's just to get an ETA for a fix.
If there is any ISP reading this that is willing to sell me a pipe equivalent to what I have now from rhythms (the only DSL vendor in the area) for a reasonable fee, feel free to e-mail me at: esj@harvee.billerica.ma.us with your company information.
