Please don't force GSM on those of us who are happy with CDMA, which is clearly superior where it matters - reliability. |

| Common Carriage
Sounds good to me.
What Wireless carriers are doing is no different then old Bell System model coupling service delivery with equipment.
We need notion of Common Carriage, some companies provide connectivity, others hardware, and still others applications and content.

| Real competition after the LTE convergence takes place
»Senators Look To Kill Handset Exclusivity
ability to choose the handset they want on the network that suits them best -- or performs the best in their geographical area. This won't really work until the US is no longer on 2 separate wireless systems(CDMA, GSM) and finally converges on the LTE platform in a couple years. Then, IF the FCC isssues some kind of mandate about no exclusivity contracts, it will be possible to move from carrier to carrier with that now unsubsidized very expensive smartphone. -- My BLOG .. .. | said by PhoenixDown :I am sure carriers will still be able to lock you into a contract in exchange for a reduced rate on the phone. Maybe. But I am not so sure that carriers will want to subsidize phones anymore if a person can get that phone to use on any carrier. Especially with the rules being as they are now about enforcing prorated ETF fees.
In any case, I suspect that any subsidy tied to a 2 yr contract will be much less than it is now. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page |

The budget crisis is solved, the economy fixed, healthcare problems over, energy crisis over, all the troops are home...
At least it must be since only after the PRIORITIES these asswipes are supposed to be working on are completed should they spend 1 G-D second worried about what distributor carries a particular product.
What is next? They are going to bitch that Transformers came out on HBO only instead of Starz? That you have to subscribe to cable to get On Demand? Exclusive distribution deals happen every day in nearly every industry.
If the iPhone or the Pre were the only phones on the planet, sure, it could be a problem but theses are just a couple of the a zillion handsets in a hugely competitive marketplace. -- POKE 65495,1 |

I agree. But we are moving rapidly in to the control of the populists that now run the government. And the squeaky wheel will be greased whether it should be or not. We can't have all those fanatic, whining iPhone customers locked in to AT&T or the world will spin off its axis.
P.S.>> Populist defined: »www.yourdictionary.com/populist

No it's not because Ma Bell was the only game in town. They were a monopoly in voice telecom.
Cellular is anything but a monopoly. If you don't like AT&T you are free to go to any other carrier you want to buy a different phone. Don't like Sprint, you are free to go to any other carrier and buy something other than the Pre. -- POKE 65495,1 |

As technology improves software defined radios (SDR) may be able to even mask that difference.

I disagree. cDMA is a lot less spectrum-heavy than gSM, and CDMA, particuarly on the SMV codec, sounds landline-qality. GSM...meh. |

What should happen is these Senators should be investigated. If it turns out they received a single dollar in contributions from a wireless carrier they should go to prison for accepting a bribe.
And those executives of the wireless carriers who made the contribution should similarly go to prison for bribery. -- POKE 65495,1 |

Nobody is forcing the American people to buy an iPhone. Apple has a right to put their phone on the network of their choice. Last time I checked this is a free country where people and businesses are free to make the decisions they want. Just supply a different firmware for a different carrier, or even a plug in module like the SIM with the proper software on it.
Anyway, GSM sucks donkey balls and I don't want to be stuck with it. I have both a GSM and CDMA phone and CDMA on Verizon wins hands down. |

| reply to texans20 blatant violation of both property rights and contractual agreements; what next, the government forcing computer companies to share their patents and ideas because 'exclusiveness' doesn't foster competition?
This is complete BS. As much as I would love to have the iPhone on Sprint, I wouldn't want it to be because of coercion acted upon another individual. |

| Network SIM lock is anti-GSM
Network SIM lock was a late addition to the GSM specification. The main benefit of the SIM card is to smooth interoperability and interchangeability between subscription and handset. SIM locking obliterates the whole point of having a SIM card. Whereas Euro markets saw the SIM-based model as great for competitiveness and consumer choice, the business-tilted American market sees it as damaging to corporate bottom line.
Am I alone in thinking that a carrier should be measured by its QoS and not by what handset and content partnerships it can wrangle? |
