Maybe service only carriers are needed

Maybe it's time for separation of hardware and service. For example here in Georgia, for natural gas service everyone in my area (and possibly all of GA?) use Atlanta Gas and Light to provide the physical plumbing and meter for our gas service. Then you have to pay a marketing company for the actual gas, its all provided over the same pipe.

Maybe the phone companies need to treat the connection/network as a single hardware entity paid a small flat fee and all the carriers need only be soft selling the service.

fwiw, cellphone companies already lease out their networks to MVNOs. And I hate the fact that gas is sold by a company different than the provider.. $15/mo that goes to AGL and another $15 to the provider + $6/mo for "customer service"? Not something I like paying every month to SCANA Energy (these are summer prices.. only gas-consuming device in summer is hot water)

The phone, the phone, the phone

One of the posters commented the phones made the difference. I've had T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T. I live in a very hilly area that is heavily forested and surrounded by miles of flat land. I've had Motorola and Sanyo phones that didn't work worth a toot in this area. I had Sanyo phones that had great calls, and superb camera but I could not sit under a Sprint tower and send the pictures from the phone to my computer. All that stopped when I bought Sanyo phones. Congestion, farmland, mountains all make a difference. I had no trouble from California to Chicago on either the northern mountains or southern Texas route until I was out of range of a tower. I'll keep my Sanyo phone and cabin in the woods.

If the companies all sold a model that worked in all areas, there wouldn't be any need to beat connectivity to death. .

CDMA???

I'm on AT&T and I buy my own cellphones. I've been using high-end unlocked Nokia devices for many years, since I do no not like any of the subsidized phones AT&T offers. I also travel for quite a bit throughout Europe mostly and enjoy being able to just swap my SIM and use any local service I choose.
Why would I even consider CDMA? The quality of the coverage is debatable and you get VERY LIMITED choices of devices, that have severely crippled software geared to serve the needs of that particular carrier.
For example I have installed on my phone the Garmin XT GPS software, that requires no data and not even cell coverage in order to work. Heck I can even take out my SIM card and my GPS would still work great and just the same.
Most other GPS services provided by the carriers require special fees and a data plan. I can give you more examples like that with VOIP, tethering, etc.

I pick the phone I like, I pick the service I need and I'm all set. CDMA, I don't think so ....
