At the moment Verizon's pricing in OOL territory seems to be a bit high for the speeds, or rather the speeds are low vs. what OOL is offering at the similar price point. This should fix that. I'll take 15/5 over 15/2 any day of the week, and 25/15 over 30/5...even if the 30 is really uncapped...any day of the year. Considering the pricing on 25/15 via DSLExtreme is a mere $55, I'd call that an upload-speed deal. Same thing with 15/5...around here I'd be willing to shell out $80 per month for those speeds, easily 
Abut contract extensions, who cares? If the service is that good, I don't mind sticking around for a year.
If 20/5 actually does become 25/15 then naturally you could expect the 20/20 tier going up to 25/25 and the 50 Mbit tier going up to 50/25 or higher. So naturally I'd get 25 Mbps symmetric...mmm, heavy-duty symmetric fiber connections. Wish I had one.
All this to say that I'd rather have 25/25 than 50/10 or even 101/15. especially when 101/15 is running over cable infrastructure that is just barely high-bandwidth enough to handle the load.
For low users, 15/5 for $40 is a very, very nice deal... |

Those speed increase are great and competitve with cable companies.
Cablevision's base speed has been 15/2 for quite sometime now. They also offer up to 101 meg down with its Docsis 3.0 service.
Comcast recently increased its base to 12/2.
Verizon's 15/5 especially with the increased upload will give it the competitive advantage on the lower end.
Cablevision however will still brag that it has the fastest residential internet speeds of 101 meg down.
I believe that Verizon won't match or exceed that until it upgrades its entire footprint to GPON which may take sometime. |

I'm calling tomorrow to extend my contract for as long as possible for 20/20 speeds, in case this rumor turns out to be true. I can always upgrade later if the proposed (delayed) 25/25 comes to fruition later (which I'm starting to doubt).

That would be nice, higher speeds at a reasonable price.
But, I'm confused- at first it seems that everyone will notice some increase in speed, even if it's not a large increase.
Then, it implies that you must get an upgrade to get any increase in internet speed at all. Which is it?
It would be like Verizon to say that all customers will get some type of increase, around this weekend. Then, require that folks do the CSR song and dance to get it.

Symmetrical speeds especially for the lower tiers have been long witheld and surcharged (+$15) over asymmetrical packages. The time's come to truly compete and offer better packages than the competition.. which in most competitive markets means:
15/15 megabits $29.95
30/30 megabits $59.95
50/30 megabits $79.95
103/75 megabits (answering cablevision's 101/15) for
$101.15
We won't even make the comparisons to other countries that have 100/100 for under $50/month
Comcast will be the most hurt from that kind of price scale/cut... but hey, that's competition for ya. Alternatively, they can max out current BPON's @ 75/75 megabit for $89.95 That would be alot cheaper than a truck roll to swap out BPONS which there are MANY in the field now.. so a custom tier for maxing it out should be considered.
Though, this will be a tipping point for many consumers to consider cutting the cable-tv service, because anything above about 30 megabits is a direct result of the customer demanding video services over the internet, be it streaming, downloading or 'illicit' swapping of files. This all comes on the heels of building good will after jettisoning BAD R.O.I. footprints to companies such as fairpoint, SO THE BOLDER THE OFFERINGS, THE MORE GOOD WILL YOU SPREAD (to the consumer) AT THE EXPENSE OF THE CABLE INDUSTRY, WHOM YOUR IN DIRECT COMPETITION WITH. |

So right now, we have:
20/5
20/20
50/20
If the rumors are right, that will become:
25/15
20/20
50/20
Until August, and then the rumor'd tiers are:
25/15
25/25
75/25
Now that looks ok I guess, but still the gap betwen the 1st and 2nd tiers is hardly there, compared to the current gap between 20/5 and 20/20. Likewise, 20/20 to 50/20 isn't as big a leap as 25/25 to 75/25.
I guess time will tell. I just wish I knew for sure whether 20/20 was going to be around or not.
I'll just call and extend my contract I guess and hopefully if it goes the way it normally does, I can just start a new contract in August so I'm not really doing anything but potentially extending my contract buy a few months.

Add Qwest and Cableone.
Cableone is a local crappy provider here in Boise, Idaho that has low daily bandwidth caps of 1GB download and 150mb upload (on their standard tier, the others aren't much higher) from noon - midnight. There are no caps from midnight - noon. If you go over the cap they drop your bandwidth in half. They are also way behind the curve on bandwidth (even though in many areas of major cities they have FTTH or at least FTTN). Their current offerings are 3mbps/384kpbs, 5mpbs/512kpbs, 10mpbs/1mpbs.
I would love to have Verizon's FIOS here. I would be happy to pay $60 just for their standard tier... |
