Classic case

This is a classic case of the left hand not knowing what the right is doing. Lovely little behind the public back deal.

Can't wait to see what happens next with this

It's not like this is unusual

Just look at when HD DVD was competing against BD. Toshiba and Sony still partnered on other things even they they fought fiercely between HD DVD and BD.

Re: Classic case

Actually, it is a classic case where SALES people are desperate. Cable ad sales has been HAMMERED in the last year or two. Local automotive is the #1 buyer of local cable ads. And we all know where they are. And without an election cycle this year, the rest of the year looks bleak, too.

I could get Comcast selling ads time to Verizon Wireless. But to sell ad time on your television service to a competitor trying to steal your television customers makes zero sense. Talk about your targeted advertising....

So, Comcast sells a :30 spot to Verizon FiOS and it charges say $50 per 100,000 HH per spot. If each time they air the spot FiOS steals only 1/10th of a customer (1 new customer for every million impressions), they've bought a customer for $500. The customer lifetime value of a customer for Comcast is about $3,000 (including all services they may have). Soo....Verizon buys a customer for $500 plus commission, installation and discount expenses and Comcast "sells" a $3,000 customer to Verizon for $500. This = DUMB.

Verizon got suckered

Everytime Verizon runs one of their ads, Comcast will run their ad showing the guy with the backhoe in the yard.

Get Verizon's money, then trash them at the same time. WooHoo!

I don't think they could legally discriminate

Ads are ads, and money talks.
Sure, its not in Comcast's best interest to promote their competition, however, its done _ALL_ the time. I have TWC cable, and AT&T promotes Uverse on it... nothing new, move on.

Yes money trumps all and, of course, let's not forget that Comcast is sometimes the pot calling the kettle black. . . particularly in Pottstown, PA.

I don't think people understand this story...

This isn't about Comcast selling ad time to Verizon. This is about Comcast Spotlight selling ads on both video systems to local advertisers.

Again I agree with funchords. You all are misunderstanding what this means. Comcast Spotlight will be selling and managing the ad time for Verizon's TV service. This does not mean just for Comcast or Verizon commercials but for all commercials from local and national businesses. This is not much different then the deal they made with DirecTV recently and have been doing for quite awhile with Charter and Wave to name a couple.

It's good to see even though they are all fighting for subscribers they at least agree that advertising needs to be made easier for businesses and makes it a win-win for all systems to have one place for advertisers to go for TV ad sales.

Ammunition...

@article above
Isn't this like shooting yourself in the foot? Or providing the ammunition so your enemy can shoot you in the foot?

Business is Business, but isn't this one of those lines you don't cross.. ?

To me it doesn't make sense at all. And as someone who reads a lot of business books (to develop myself).. I cannot wrap my mind around this.

Its like Comcast is focused on the short term, they will get an instant profit I assume, but Verizon is going to be raking in potential long term customers.

Re: I don't think people understand this story...

NOBODY is making FiOS sell ads on Comcast's ad service. FiOS is raising rates due to them wanting to recover costs at a quicker rate or whatever reason they are claiming. You don't like Comcast and that is your right, but don't say pricing of a service has ANYTHING to do with this.
