Too bad

No big deal to me, but it's still unfortunate that they got screwed over in court.

Napster

Napster was sold, lots of other P2P apps took its place.

The beauty of this is that TPB is not the only place where you can get Torrents.

Yeah, while all the media were focused on the Pirate Bay, 100 other websites were being developed to take it's place if it was to go down.

You really have to wonder if trying to stamp out file sharing is like trying to tax breathing.

Never going to work for them.

I'll bet the Pirate Bay team that sold out decided to cash in before their sentences came down in court. They can cash in, clear out, and then ignore the court decision.

Is their blog/site down? I tried from my Comcast connection in Orlando, FL, and from my Fios connection in Portland, OR, and it just times out...

They are probably just getting buried by users trying to check out the blog. In effect, they are suffering from an unintentional DOS attack.

Where's that logo of the sinking Pirate Bay ship?

Seems pretty appropriate for the situation at hand. This is the beginning of the end for them.

But yet, considering that there are hundreds of other torrent sites, it won't be such a big loss.

But it could put quite a strain on other trackers since TPB handled some 50% of all public torrent traffic.

Even still, when TPB goes down, likely half of all torrents will go with it. Of course, you know what they say: Cut off one head, 9 grow in its place.

I'll bet someone hasn't been reading up the past few months and missed the part where they were sentenced to jail time and fined out the ass.

It worked a few hours ago, but it is indeed down now.

The court appeals will be ongoing for months at a minimum. Still plenty of time to clear out.

Surely you aren't suggesting that the TPB owners aren't altruistic in their ways and beliefs about ripping off the evil media conglomerates to free content for everyday joe schmoes and that their motives really are about money? Money is a powerful motivator whether you're a couple guys helping to unlawfully redistribute copyrighted works or your the copyright owners attempting to maintain control of those copyrighted works.

TPB...tracking?

How exactly does TPB work as far as tracking? Can an individual ISP track who is using that site and turn info over to authorities? Just not sure if this is a good site for people to use (have never tried it nor do I know all the issues). Have more music than I would ever need but wondering what all the fuss is about and if those who are getting "caught" are using TPB or other direct download sites versus torrents.

No one and I mean NO ONE would be more happy to see the Pirate Bay self-destruct than me. But that is far from the case yet. There are already comments out there that the new owners are already re-thinking their decision to shut down TPB torrents.

Update: According to Johan Sellström, the CTO of Global Gaming Factory, the plans have changed after Peter Sunde talked to us. “We had discussed closing it down initially so I think that’s why he said so. The plan is to use technology from Peerialism that makes bandwidth utilization more efficient and then it would not make sense to shut it down,” he said, adding. “Peerialism will modify the tracker but it will be backwards compatible. But all this is subject to change if for some reason it would not work. It is our ambition to do so.”
