I am not sure what to do but this is exactly what will happen in the US if the big greedy ISP get their way.I have already filed papers on the FCC against Slime Warner twice.They are the only real game for access in Portland Maine.
I have read how some cities started their own networks.
How do they do that ? Maybe if I knew I could propose something to the city of Portland ???
I just want to do soemthing more than I have.If this happens then
I can kiss goodbye the Holoacaust WW2 documentary I host and give out for free.It is around a 24 gig download as it is on 6 DVD's.I also have alot of music and videos I give out for free of my art.Consumption billing willl probably destroy that and many other artists sites as well.

They want to control and monetize every last aspect of our activities online. People will only want to visit whatever sites the ISPs allow for fear that they'll go over their caps and get ripped off for outrageous per-gigabyte fees- ISP networks will become walled gardens with razorwire fences. And any content creator or online retail presence will probably have to pay fees to get on the ISPs' "non-cap" list.
Money from everyone for the "privilege" of being online- that's every ISP accountant's wet dream.

What you can do is write/call/email your Congressman and ask them to co-sponsor H.R.2902 which would force large ISPs (> 2M subscribers) to submit plans for metered billing to the FTC for approval.

It will happen here in the US too. It has nothing to do with the impend Broadband implosion but the lost revenue the cable companies WILL loose. Just make believe the internet will crash, take the blue pill and impose caps.

I do realize this was about New Zealand but it is a lesson to us here in the USA.
And I think I will call up my congresswoman and ask about what she will do.We must all work together to stop this from happening in the USA.Some companies here are already doing it and it is totally inexcusable.These companies are not hurting for cash they are just plain greedy. |

I believe shaping, throttling, caps, etc., all have roles as valid network management tools if they're implemented correctly. "Inexcusable" is relative to who's managing a network and attempting to make a profit. Your sweeping statement about not hurting for cash ignores a big swath of smaller ISPs that may not have over abundant resources. |

This company's business model was like selling a 1 MPG car. Lots of power, lots of cool features.... Great until it comes time to fill up.
Then customers junk the car because they can't afford to fuel it, and the company finds itself failing -- just like GM with its gas guzzlers. And just as deservedly.
People seem still to be forgetting that bandwidth costs money.
Blaming the ISP in the situation described in this article is like blaming gas stations for GM's woes. |

| you know what there is no excuse what so ever they have been taken tax breaks, and been subbed by the local, state, and fed gov for years on years to lay wire.
this is not just the telco or cableco its both of them
yet now that its the age of internet web tubes what ever you wanta call it
now because instead of using all of that money that got, and the tax breaks and what not
they have done nothing but lined there pockets and the local gov that they paid off to continue to do busniss as usauly
like i said some one else on here
these companys will continue to screw the costumer till its not longer a profit to them
if they go and overcharge every one say a total of all costumers say 1,000,000 but they only get a fine of say 200,000 then so what they was still a profit of 800,000 on there screwing every one
get it till the fine fits or out weighs the crime they will continue to do bisnuss as always
when they make a fine worth it like say a pay back of 3:1 then this shit heads will stop with it |
