If the US government would only do that to the FCC. Limit the FCC to tech issues and keep them out of policy decisions regulating OTA, Telcos, & cable companies. |

For those who constantly dog US providers and hold up Japan as a sort of broadband utopia, is the grass still greener over there? |

The culture is different over there, cell phones are used as mobile computing platforms instead of just for texting and two or three calls a month. |

| reply to JasonOD No one is saying that we don't get that mobile providers need caps. Of course I get that A LOT more than I get cable/telco ISPs saying that. The problem is that 5 GB is a joke, the overage fees are a joke. Even Verizons new "lower" fees of 5 cents per MB is a total rip-off. Then there is the prices. Ok fine have your 5 GB cap and 5 cent per MB overage fees then you should only charge $20 a month for that crap.
You want to charge $60 a month. There's no reason how a 20 GB cap would cripple a service. If you want to charge high overage fees as an incentive to NOT go over then putting at 5 cents per MB isn't going to stop that. People think "5 cents that's not too bad" because they have no clue about the difference between a MB and a GB. Charge $1 per GB( about 1/50th of what they charge now ) not only are they getting the actual cost and then some of the extra bandwidth, people will repsond to getting charged $ vs getting charged ¢ per unit and thus will be less likely to go over. Since charging so much is suppsosedly to encourage LESS use as not to tax the system too much. |

| Jammie Thomas files appeal, asks for new trial
»news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-102805···1_3-0-20
As expected, Jammie Thomas-Rasset, the Minnesota woman found liable for willful copyright infringement of 24 songs last month, filed her appeal on Monday.
Thomas-Rasset, who was ordered by a jury to pay $1.92 million in damages last month, has asked the court to either alter or amend the judgment, remove or change the award of statutory damages to the statutory minimum or give her a new trial. If the award is changed, Thomas-Rasset argues she should pay the minimum damages of $18,000.

Yeah, the OS component that just keeps on giving and giving...

appeal or not they would never see a penny. it would be impossible to get that from someone except for maybe overpaid corporate execs. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |

their problem is porn and over here its blockbuster films.
what i dont get is why many 3g TOS here prohibit online gaming, really something like WoW not only sucks over 3g but doesnt even use much bandwidth. an iphone running Pandora likely uses more. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |

Oh how short the memory of kids are today. Before IE came installed with Windows you PAID FOR browsers. If you idiots win and that day comes again, you'll be whining again too. It's just an endless display of whining by the general public today. |

That'd be terrific. We could go back to forced renting of our phones. Broadband would be defined as anything over 56k. AT&T attorneys would write FCC-free legislation (obligingly passed by elected officials) that would illegalize VoIP, independent ISP's, and any web content not expressly allowed by AT&T EULAs.
A real Panacea.
Did you have an alternative to the FCC in mind, or are you expecting Tel-Corps to magically become consumer-centric?
Expecting future Tel-Corps to suddenly have consumer interests as their driving priority is a little like saying "If we just invented The Internet all over again, there wouldn't be any porn in it".
It just doesn't seem to be a realistically possible future.

Wow, talk about overdramatizing the situation. Not to mention that your whining to GET yourselves to pay for browsers, while whining about ceos making money...
Before IE was bundled with Windows, YOU PAID FOR IE AND NETSCAPE. Then IE started to be bundled with Windows and you got it for free.
Tell me, how much whining would you do if you had to buy browsers now? |
