It's because of Crap like this

That Apple will never be taken as seriously as they think they should be.

If Apple wants legitimacy and the increased market share that comes with that, they need so stop being so secretive, open themselves up to healthy competition and stop trying to destroy any and everyone who doesn't agree with their little dystopian world view that tells them they are the only ones who really matter....Google voice is being seen as a threat rather then use as an opportunity to spur healthy competition...

If Apple/AT&T doesn't like Google Voice then they should design their own app and compete fairly rather then take the chickenshit way out and prevent it from being offered through the Apple Store....

Their shortsightedness will eventually be their downfall and as long as they continue to make boneheaded decisions at the management level, they'll be nothing more then the little dog nipping at the heels of the bigger players.

They already kiss AT&T's butt and have lost their head up there as a result so what's next?

Mine still works

OK, well, I received my invite 3 weeks ago. Downloaded/installed GoogleVoice from app store and set things up.

I love the system! Free SMS; meaning I can cancel the $5.00/Mo Mafia fee from AT&T. Also I have been having folks call me on by new GV number. When a sufficient number of calls are routed this way I will be able to down-grade my AT&T $59.00/Mo to $29.00/Mo rate class. Saving me another bundle.

The VoiceMail facilities are are neat. A VoiceMail-to-text email arrives in my google email box (and pops up on my iPhone), and I can deal with it any way I want. Also the SPAM facilities are wonderful, you can block any individual calls, or send them a particular message including the "disconnected tone". GREAT for phone spammers! This is not only a great app, but a great facility. I have no POTS, and my iPhone is my only phone. In this day and age of hi-tech, this is what phone service should be. I LOVE it, and would be HIGHLY PISSED if I lost it.

All this to say, that it all still works! I just tested it all, and nothing has been "blocked", and no functionality has be removed; at least not yet.

My fear at this point, given this thread, is that somehow APPLE will be able to delete the app from my iTunes/iPhone. Does anyone know of a way to lock this app, so it can not be screwed with?

Also, this whole episode has really pissed me off. Is there a way I can SHARE this app with others? I would be willing to give it to anyone who wants it. All I need to know is how to do that safely, without divulging any personal data possibly embedded it the app.

This entire sordid episode of CONTROL PISSES me off immensely! If this is indeed AT&T, when Verizon can support the iPhone, I for one will bail on AT&T. Screw the ETF, I won't pay them a cent! I have NO credit (all transactions are cash for me)

So, if anyone wants to start a private discussion on how to share GV, just IM me, we can share email addrs and discuss the possibilities in that venue. I have no financial goals here; technology belongs to the people, no one, but us consumers, should profit from advances paid for by US consumers!

I'm actually pretty sure Apple has designed an App Kill Switch somewhere like it was talked about a few months ago.

At any moment, any of your apps could be deleted and you wouldn't even know.

Re: Mine still works

I haven't seen that happen. I have seen other apps crippled by "upgrades" (like Craigslist), but have never seen an app actually deleted. I have seen them discontinued, but never deleted. It is easy to control what is "upgrated" in iTunes/Apps.

I have off-line backups, and can easily restore any files removed from my HD. However, the best insurance against such a felonious assault (I PAID for this, and there is NO refund from APPLE for ANYTHING) is to make it publicly available, so if it gets creamed, I can get it back again.

Anyone interested? Given the current theft threat, I will be more than willing, happy actually, to archive the app somewhere.

Bob

edit: INDEED I Paid for this. If I recall correctly it was around $5.00; That's around 500% higher than most paid-apps on the app store (most are $.99); much more than 500% if you consider most apps are free. If the bastards are going to kill it, they need to refund the money! As far as I know NO ONE EVER gets a refund from apple for apps which are defective, or are subsequently crippled ( I was essentially told to get fucked by Apple, when CraigsList was crippled (No more personals allowed) and I demanded my money back). This seems to be in direct violation of all consumer protection laws. Apple needs to be sued for being fascists, and overtly abrogating consumer rights, and engaging in false and misleading advertising; not to mention "bait and switch" laws!

You Can Kill the Kill Switch

Apple has built in a kill switch, but I don't think they've used it yet. If your iPhone is jailbroken, there is an application that kills the kill switch.

I called this right last week

I posted last week that att would kill this application. I guess I was right.

Well, you guys are underestimating AT&T's influence

because AT&T is so aggressive against Apple that the app store is prevented for offering the Google Voice application to a non-phone (itouch).

If your phone is Jailbroken get it from ModMyi.com

You can now get GV Mobile from the ModMyi.com Cydia repo.

What the Heck Did You Expect?

How people can keep pouring money down Apple's throat for a PDA that can't run a single application that doesn't come fromApple and with the ongoing daily renewed approval of Apple is beyond me. It's worse than HDMI/HDCP.

If MS ever tried that kind of crap (and they have) the pitchforks would have come out long ago.

It's AT&T not APPLE you dope! Why would Apple, whose primary source of income is the 30% they take from every app sold thru the app store. GV is no threat to Apple, it's why the allowed the app to be sold thru the app store in the first place. But it scares AT&T since they make money thru service contracts. And they want to make sure people don't find ways of getting out these lavish contracts.

Yes this has anti-trust written all over it. Seriously the state of the cellular data/voice service in the U.S. is atrocious.
