Comments on news posted 2009-08-28 12:00:41: The Cleveland Plain Dealer has been doing an excellent job this week highlighting a $1.99 "data usage fee" Verizon's been imposing on wireless customers who, well, aren't using any data. ..

I am getting these charges too.....

I have a messaging plan added to my voice plan but no data plan. I kept getting these $1.99 charges month after month.

I don't use the wall gardened web browser nor do I shop their VCAST store.

Verizon Wireless kept insisting it was because "picture messages use data," and even though I had a SMS/MMS package I would still be billed for any data use incurred as a result of sending/receiving picture messages.

I even had a supervisor argue with me on this over the phone. Now I know those floor level sups are nothing more than CSR's who have been in CS for way too long and promoted out of charity.

Data Charges

I'm just recently switched to Verizon from Alltel. Not too happy at the moment.
I noticed the data charges on my bill and have not accessed any of the apps.
Is it posted on their site somewhere that picture messages will use data? I wish someone could post the link because I only read that data charges will apply for mobile web which I have not used.

Re: Data Charges

picture mail uses data, Alltel billed data by minutes verizon bills data by MB, you shouldnt notice a difference until you change to a verizon device and plan. (which you dont have to do unless you want too)

I see this charge every once in a while

I see this charge every once in a while and I have unlimited smartphone data plan. Sometimes when i call and they remove it before I pay the bill, then I pay new amount and get late notices for $1.99 the next month!

They usually fix it but come on!

Sounds right

Ol' Roger Tang, bleeds red and black for vzw. I think VZW has gotten money hungry, from the way they treat customers from the way they treat employees. I think failure is in the future.

Re: lets check this out

I think the problem is

1 buy the correct kind of phone for what you are gonna rely use dont buy a fancy touchscreen internet enabled phone for the kids and not expect then to rack up the bill

2 Verizon needs to give out more accurate ez to understand info on what causes data charges and what I did to receive them so it can be prevented or corrected It could be something I am doing that is causing them if so help me fix it

3 educate there reps to better inform us an what to expect and what not to use

3 sprint att verizon and tmobile 3g device all charge this way so this is not a isolated problem

Sorry but if I pay extra for a message plan that includes picture and text messages I shouldn't get hit with data fees as well.

most likely just another amdocs feature

amdocs (who does the billing systems and back end billing processing for all of the us wireless carriers... weird ehh?) is most likely the cause here... their software tends to err on the side of the client, not the clients customers

What a joke

Yeah! I'm glad this story has been finally picked up by a a major newspaper! It's funny, but this is the only article that is often hit upon by "strangers" on our family web site (»tinyurl.com/ksqyr7).

Anyway, the thing that truly ticks me off is that I unknowingly switched from Verizon charging minutes for data usage to a $1.99 per MB when I upgraded my calling plan. Obviously, I must not have read the small print. The charge first appeared on our bill when my wife BROWSED for a ringtone. So not only is Verizon charging us for browsing, but then you have to pay for a Get It Now app. What a joke.

The really crazy part is that the "Get It Now" menu item is essentially a "$1.99" button. If you push it, you'll get billed (unless you QUICKLY exit out of the system).

I suspect that this is Verizon's way of earning back some cash from those people who used to illegally tether their phone. Still, it doesn't make it right.

I was getting hit for 2.99 but NO LONGER!

My second line, I gave to my father. I use pic/text. He would
have no clue what that was. So I asked to disable that feature
for his phone only. They did that. Then I noticed and not so soon
either the $2.99 (0mb) data access charges. After several months
of this. (getting it removed) I questioned the CSR about how
can a disabled phone get data charges? After 5 minutes the CSR
found out why. The Verzion-wireless part of Data-access was
disabled but not the ROAMING data-access!

So here is whats happening. As my father drives around he passes
through an area not well cover by VZ. The phone wishing to keep
in touch will search "roaming towers". Finding one but not getting
a "clear" signal, will attempt all forms of cell to tower comms.
This attempt somehow is being billed as a roaming data charge.

I suspect that VZ shares in that data charge with the other
carrier. Not wishing to look a gift horse in the mouth. Does
nothing unless the customer complains.

argh they said they couldn't turn it off

My experience was a bit different:

They took the charges off but told me they could not prevent data charges without taking off picture messaging, which we buy a 250 message plan per phone to use on both phones.

I wish I had a way to prove to the customer service rep that they can turn off mobile web without turning off picture messaging.

ask for "web block" but no guarantees. the 2 services are tied pretty closely together.

Scumbags One and All

Exactly why I finally dumped Verizon. All cell phone companies are scumbags, but Verizon is the scummiest!

CutTheCord

@verizon.net
I call make a DSL deal with Verizon (offshore) , get a rate for a year, get a reference number to document the call date ,time, and specific arangement and think I am good for another year......

WRONG!

Next month bill arrives and the DSL rate is prorated wrong. I call and spend more time and effort armed with my reference number from a month earlier.
They admit the error and adjust the overcharge off I get another reference number to document the call and I think now I am good for eleven months.....

WRONG!

Next month bill arrives and now the entire one month DSL charge is $2.00 higher than agreed to two months prior. Now the overseas Verizon DSL operater says they will not honor the agreement they made two months ago.

The only good part is that I HAVE NO CONTRACT and I can "cit the cord" at will.

I miss my America's Choice 2 plan

I am so happy to see this at the top of DSL Reports and hope they put something to the top of their page every couple of weeks.

I wish I stayed on the America's Choice plan where I had the ability to use backup assistant, like they advertise, for FREE. Now if you use it, it's $1.99/month. If you don't use it and hit a button by accident (browser, vcast...) , it's $1.99/month. What a joke.

They can block all data from your phone; however, that also blocks picture messages. Yes, you can still send text messages, but you will no longer receive/transmit pictures. With every phone being a picture phone, this is a very half-assed way of doing business.

If someone is reading this on behalf of a class-action lawsuit, please sign me up. I go through hell and back to get my bill straightened and have gone so far as to contact the president of my region.

While Sprint doesn't have 92% coverage, they work fine in my area and I look forward to doing business with them after my Verizon contract has expired.

Re: I miss my America's Choice 2 plan

Hey I remember when swbell charged me for NOT having a long distance carrier. I don't remember the exact amount but it was a few cents less than having them as a long distance carrier. So it seems that a LOT of co's scam their customers. Its a shame that companies do this type of thing but if you cancel they just say there is one born every minute....NEXT

I think it's the apps registering

I have BackupAssistant and VZNav which is not supposed to charge data, however for several months I have seen 0.001MB usage I think that is the app or phone software reporting to verizon to bill me again for another month... anyone actually check their current usage before it's billed? If it's this low maybe thats what it is... since it's only 1KB and less than the home page would be... if u clicked on the MW and less than multiple BA updates...

$1.99 Data Charge

Just got off the phone with Michael Pizzuto from "the President's" office. (Ha!) Anyway, that would be Lowell McAdams, Pres. of Verizonwireles.

My bill contained $1.99 data errors going back to April, 2009. I was initially told by customer service that I had wrongfully sent too much picture message data (have unlimited picture messaging), and excess data is sent via wireless email (have that blocked.)

I wrote a paper letter to the Pres., then received a phone call from Mr Pizzuto ( not sure of the spelling.) He is not your friend. He is covering a lot of butt! Beware of this man.

To be continued...

Verizon's phantom data charges

Same story here. We all got new phones, they came loaded with icons that made it look like a game or application was already on the phone. But, if you click the icon, it connects to Get it Now. If you disconnect as soon as you see that's what it is doing, it doesn't matter..you are still charged a minimum of $1.99 for "browsing". Very deceptive, and the reply I got from customer service was totally unsatisfactory.

Two places to register your complaint. Your state's attorney General, and the FCC. If we all complain, maybe Verizon will get the message.
