AGAIN I say-Don't count copper out yet!

Don't count copper out yet-there's still some life in her. I'm almost two miles from my local CO and have 6 mbps DSL. Who would have thought a decade ago that this was possible?
My neighbor who telecommutes has been conencted to my DSL all week? Why? Because her 'superior' Roadrunner cable Internet service has been a roadcrawler all week. Fact is, there's not much that's more relaible then telco copper plant.

New technologies such as line bonding and other protocols will soon squeeze performance out of this plant that it's planners never deemed possible. There's also at least one analog DSL equalizer/booster that can be installed mid way down a DSL line to double it's usable distance. Google 'Adrenaline DSL' for more details.

Don't count copper out yet...

Local, local, local

Years ago Verizon used to have local offices with managers who could make local decisions. Today's one size fits all mentality is causing them to go the way of the railroads. 2008 showed that no company is too big to fail. We'll be bailing them out too because the pentagon isn't big on cable.

zinc

the reason verizon's landline business is dead is because
verizon killed it. remember, they were originally a
cellphone company. they bought nynex and gte so they could
get nynex/gte's backbone networks. they never wanted any of
the landline customers to begin with!
i'm going to miss tdm telephony.

Re: zinc

You got your history all wrong..

Verizon was not originally a cell phone company. NYNEX operated Nynex Mobile, Bell Atlantic operated Bell Atlantic Mobile, the 2 merged to become BA Nynex Mobile..

then Nynex and Bell Atlanic merged all their operations to become BA..

Next BA and GTE merged to become Verizon

Musings

I figure this change will follow this path;

The telcos will jump ship from the regulated utility service to the largely unregulated cable/VoIP services. They will abuse their power, rip off customers where they are in a monopoly or oligopoly market and fail to keep their promises of expanding broadband services to other than high density markets.

At some point there will be a triggering political event that drives them back into regulation and possibly where the distribution lines and equipment are considered separate common carriers.

In the meantime, you'll see throttling, traffic caps, selective restriction of content on their internet side and invasive customer monitoring, logging and distribution of customer activities and communications content of phone and internet services to whoever wants to pay for it - or whoever issues a civil or criminal subpoena or warrant.
