| This is a scam! Bandwidth costs practically nothing to make and with fiber, practically nothing to transport. Coax does cost a bit more for transport, but not much. What Time Warner is really bitching abbout is the opposite of what they claim-not that there isn't enough bandwidth, but there's TOO MUCH!
See, bandwitdth is like electricity-it can't easily be stored. Therefore, you have to design your networks for peak period usage and then watch as part of the day they run at a very low capacity. By charging tiered, metered billing they hope to force users to use the bandwidth at night when there's capacity. See, any tiered approach would allso likely have different rates at night, simiilar to what telcos used to do withh long distance. By pulling this stunt, they can make money from this otherwise unused time period. |
