I agree, and this is the root of the problem. I think the truth is not that you have to pay for Rogers internet service to use this service, but any Rogers service gets you access, from what I am understand.
The anger from me and everyone else is that at the same time Rogers (who along with bell et al) are complaining to the CRTC for more money, and the ability to bill more for services, because their infrastructure is not capable of handling the bandwidth currently being used, they are releasing this bandwidth intensive service. So they are capping their internet users to 'prevent over usage' and they are trying to get more people to use the internet more. Seems counter intuitive, and really makes moderate internet users (like me) very very angry. A 250G cap with reasonable overage charge seems fair to me....a 60G cap is criminal. I rarely get near 60G and download a fair bit of stuff...but it's just me and the wife. A family with one or more teens...I couldn't imagine...now all four people using this video service...why that would just cripple the internet according to the incumbents...unless it's their video service of course.
The state of Canadian telecommunications is it total disarray.

damage join:2010-01-09 Mississauga, ON | Caps and free services Hi all, new as a member, but used DSLReports for years.
In regards to "free" services from "Robbers" Cable... NO SUCH THING. You pay for everything one way or another. Whether it's through decreased limits or through overages or increased rates.
When it comes to caps on d/u limits, my three teen boys have now officially dubbed me the "NetNazi" because I have to watch (and refuse to pay for) extra bandwidth usage beyond our 95GB limit. So much so that I am in the midst of completing a Linux box to serve that specific purpose - LIMIT what my family can do and impose my own limits upon each individual user of my internal network. I use the Internet for work (hosting/design/etc.) and to have to pay extra so my family can do what they used to do at no additional cost (up until late last spring) is not something I'm agreeable with. I would much rather sign up for a DSL service (such as Acanac - so far the best for price and capless, plus static IP AND virtual PC) and add it to my existing network (possibly bridge the two) than to pay "Robbers" another dime monthly.
Okay, I've vented, back to work -- Pay attention. It costs you nothing! »mikedamage.com | |
