Google, slowest of 3 for BBR

19 ms for OpenDNS
20 ms for Level3(usually faster than OpenDNS)
22 ms for Google
I was trying to paste my results from dig, but BBR does not seem to like the output format =(

People are sheep

You want faster DNS experience? Run your own cache DNS server and query directly from root hints. There's 26 of them at the very top, and currently I believe twelve TLD DNS servers out there to start your query caching from.

And guess what... all free

In all fairness, it won't be faster. Centralized DNS servers are going to be asked for common records with enough frequency that there is a good chance the record you are seeking resolution for can be served out of cache. You just can't complete 4 queries in the same amount of time as a single query/return cached record.

Running your own DNS server gives you more control over the operation, but it comes at the expense of performance.

I never said it wouldn't work fine -- it absolutely will.

Your statement wasn't that it would work but rather that it would be faster, which it will not.

Re: People are sheep

Unless you run your own caching server on a 486, running your own will be as fast as anyone else claiming that theirs is faster. Can't force TTLs any lower than the authoritative servers have them unless your box is authoritative for your own TLDs.

Centralized servers are going to have more people performing queries in parallel to keep the cache populated with data within TTL. If someone requests resolution for www.dslreports.com a second before you, it doesn't need to do anything other than simply push that record back to you from cache. With a smaller user group, more queries will have to be served by a recursive lookup.

It really has nothing to do with processor speed, and has everything to do with how many clients are hitting the server to keep the cache populated with current data.
