| | | it proves it pays to be stupid I wish verizon was the only example of this. Other companies code their phones so one of the two buttons next to the screen opens "web access". They can count on "butt dialing" or "fat fingering" to press that button (without having to enter a menu or sub-menu). But enough of complaining, lets fix the problem. I will offer to fix any company's billing system so it won't bill for data, if a data plan is not selected/enabled for only $10,000. This offer will help companies avoid future class action suits, and as such, is a bargain. Ten thousand dollars may seem like a lot of money, but if the phone companies can't seem to get their clueless coders to fix the problem, then ten K for a capable programmer to do an hour worth of work is a deal, after all, they pay far more for half-witted coding efforts. | |
| | | | Re: it proves it pays to be stupid T-Mobile does this to, but using their @t-zones service is free even without a data plan (since they can make far more money if you buy a ringtone, etc...). Maybe they should stop charging data if you just use their mobile store? | |

bobny1 join:2004-09-10 Bronx, NY | My poor doughter!! For months I was blaming my teenage daughter for the 1.99 data charge. I had blocked every possible feature and the charge was always there. On top of that a special third party service of 20 bucks started to show up on my bill, which took me a couple of screaming calls to fix and credit. Something needs to be done to stop this big monopolies from illegal practices and abusive behaviors. Things like forcing people to get web and internet service for 30 dollars a month even if you pay full price for the equipment. I can't understand why there is no monthly discount if you are not paying for the subsidise phone. | |
| | | Idiots or crooks? Years ago, before broadband Internet was available, I had a second phone line installed just for dial up ISP access.
Later, when I got cable Internet, I kept that line as a dedicated fax line for a business I was running out of my house.
When I no longer needed the fax, I called Verizon to close down the extra line. I asked the guy if it would be disconnected immediately and my bill would be prorated to that date. He said, "Yes. As soon as I hang up with you that line will be dead?
Sure enough, I tried after the called ended, and nothing. Dead.
Next month, I got the bill and it was for the full month on the disconnected line. A customer service rep verified that the line was killed the previous month, apologized, said not to pay the extra charges, it that she would see it doesn't happen again.
A month later, a new bill, and the charges for the disconnected line are still there! Customer service (different person of course) apologizes again, says not to pay it, and assures me this will be the last bill for that line.
Next month, same thing, same apology. The following month the charges are finally gone.
It only took 3 seconds to disconnect the line, but three months to stop billing me for it. You decide -- idiots or crooks?

Bob You may want to check your credit report at one or more of the big three agencies (see the FTC link for annualcreditreport.com). Those phone company idiots may have reported the late/non payment of the bills as a negative incident. If they did, dispute the entries with your explanation and resolution.

| | | They always try to get me with text messaging... I too have Verizon wireless. And I too have billing problems.
It's just my husband and I, we have no kids. We don't use our phones for text messages- never, ever- and don't have a data plan.
I have turned off text messaging/data multiple times. Verizon keeps turning it back on.
Every time I turn off texting/data, about a month or two later it gets mysteriously turned back on.
I'll start getting texts- from spammers- and sure enough there on my bill will be charges for those unwanted messages.
It is driving me to distraction.
I hate Verizon. | |

| Not only Verizon I've got a "family plan" withSprint and have my 89 year old motyher-in-law on the plan with a basic phone for emergencies. I requested blockage for 4 months in a row and removal of the "Data usage" fees of anywhere form 4-10 dollars. They finally figured iut out and for the last few months its been clean. Secret is you have to look at every entry on your bill, understand it and bitch real quick if there are "mystery fees" that pop up. I've not experienced Veriaon but I've got AT&T, Earthlink and Sprint and they all have slipped in various fees and surcharges over the past year. The fees ar usually less than 2.00 so its almosty not worth my time to bitch about them (and these telcos plan on that attitude). The 40.00 a month sireline ends up costing over 50.00 after they atack on all their various fees that should have been cost of doing businees in the first place. Theres not one telco that I've dealt with that I trust and some are just downright sleazy. Bottom line check your bill question anytrhing and don't let up! | |

| 2 edits | It's just........ Call in to billing support:
Agent: Ma'am, we have lots of fees to cover various expenses, this fee covers all the other expenses that do not carry a specified itemized fee, it's just part of how we make sure that we are providing you with the best possible service!
Customer: Well, what service does this fee provide me with exactly?
Agent: It's just one of those rounding errors that companies make, and to correct it, the fee is charged to compensate for allowances given to customers that are slightly too generous, inappropriate, or erroneous..
Customer: How is an error corrected by charging everyone 2 dollars a month who don't even use the service?
Agent: Well it allows us to assess the situation without taking a crippling loss, which might lead to bankruptcy etc, it's sort of like a random safeguard, so we as a company can be here as long as the economy and our shareholders see fit.
Customer: I'm switching to att, can you hear me now?

| | | 1.99 Fee I noticed this on my wife's phone months ago. Verizon explained this charge was a result of an attempt to use data (all data is blocked on my family lines), even though the attempt was not successful. I got pissed an wrote an FTC complaint, which Verizon promptly answered from their corporate offices (called several times, in fact). I was issued a credit and have not seen this charge since. They have known about this a LONG time, and appear to have only acted on those, like me, who made a big stink over it. In fact, I mentioed many months ago in my complaint that this charge was not so big to me but multiplied by millions each month was indeed a huge deal. I hope Verizon gets a big fine. | |
| BTZed join:2009-12-07 West Warwick, RI | Another way VZ gets over on the people It's amazing how Verizon can find a way to make a few extra bucks on us. This company has spent millions to track the where abouts of all their employees. The trucks all have GPS the phones they provide to their employees have GPS. When ever something is done on the VZ system it is time stamp and managers are allow to go back to see what was done when. So yes it is amazing how every month the fios or wireless bill just happens to be wrong in their favor. You ever notice it is never in our favor. | |
