Comments on news posted 2009-12-14 12:22:35: AT&T has spent much of 2009 rightfully taking heat for their inconsistent 3G network performance, limited coverage, belated functionality releases (MMS, tethering), crippled applications and last place showing in nearly every major consumer satisfact.. ..

Dropped calls.

My biggest issue is dropped calls. It happens frequently. The last time I had my iPhone exchanged, the diagnostics result, from Apple, stated I had a 20% dropped call rate. Despite AT&T's claims, service has not improved, in my area, in my first year of iPhone ownership.

When I first got my iPhone, I kept my Verizon phone/service because I was concerned about the AT&T network. My reason for concern was based on experience with AT&T. I was an "original" AT&T customer (think TDMA), and switched to Verizon because I had horrible AT&T service. After switching, to Verizon, many, many, years ago, the only complaint I have about Verizon is that they were/are so anal about the devices all having the crappy "Verizon" interface, and crippling features.

Unfortunately, nothing has changed in AT&T land.

Every time I see one of the AT&T commercials, touting its coverage, and superior network, I come one step closer to not renewing my contract. Forget the ridiculous defensive marketing, and fix the friggin problems... or lose customers when it comes time to renew. Gotta love these two year subsidized contracts...

If they fix the problems. I'll stay. If they don't fix the problems, when my contract is finished, I won't renew. Is that amazing enough for you?

Re: Dropped calls.

why do you think they are "fixing" the problems? did they promise you they were? what date did they say it would be fixed by?

well, depends how far into your 2 year contract you are or if you have been with iphone and at&t since mid-2007 when it was released. if you've been with them since the beginning and you've had this problem since then, yes, it is amazing that you are considering staying despite terrible service. in my head, i put it in the same category as why people stay with abusive partners. it's easier and more predictable than change.

If you read my original post, instead of just trying to insult me, you would know that I am 1 year into my 2 year contract.

AT&T has promised me nothing. Again. if you had read my post, I said if the fix the problems I am having.

I do not fear change. Again, if you had read my post, I have both Verizon and AT&T as cell phone providers. The only reason I added AT&T is because I wanted to try the iPhone.

Can we end this ridiculous back and forth now?

Reason?

Is there a reason that this NY Times author is fellating AT&T? Whats does the author get from this fluff piece?

I guess its not really surprising to see an author whore himself out like this now-a-days.

Selling out is so 90's.

BS article

This is one of the worst "shill" pieces I've ever seen.

I've been on AT&T's network since 2000, and on the iPhone since introduction, through all 3 models of it. The network is horrible, period. Anyone who's used it extensively in many locations knows this. There is anywhere from zero bars to 3 bars of "coverage" at my GF's house, in the middle of a city of 400k. The nearest cell tower is about 4x further away than all the other carriers' nearest tower. Try going to a ball game with a high concentration of people and getting onto AT&T's network. You might get a 5-bar 3G signal (or anything else in between that and nada), but even with a full signal, good luck getting onto the internet, because their backhaul capacity absolutely SUCKS and doesn't support large numbers of users. Meanwhile, the guy next to you on his Verizon phone has no problem connecting and doing anything he wants to via their network. I've experienced this in multiple cities with identical results.

AT&T is going to lose the golden goose sometime in 2010, and no amount of spin via fraudulent articles like this one is going to save their bacon. Good riddance.
