ATT Takes Blame for iPhone Faults - NYTIMES 12/13/09

In short, even though Consumer Reports currently says ATT is worse than Verizon, independent companies say otherwise.

"Roger Entner, senior vice president for telecommunications research at Nielsen, said the iPhone’s “air interface,” the electronics in the phone that connect it to the cell towers, had shortcomings that “affect both voice and data.” He said that in the eyes of the consumer, “the iPhone has the nimbus of infallibility, ergo, it’s AT&T’s fault.” AT&T does not publicly defend itself because it will not criticize Apple under any circumstances, he said. AT&T and Apple both declined to comment on Mr. Entner’s assessments." (ATT is a client)

"More evidence that AT&T’s data network is head-and-shoulders above Verizon’s comes from Root Wireless, a start-up in Bellevue, Wash., that is developing software for consumers to install on their smartphones to do continuous network tests. This generates empirical data for consumers who “today are buried under opinions and advertising slogans,” said Paul Griff, the chief executive. Root Wireless has no business relationship with any carrier."

"This year, Root Wireless ran 4.7 million tests on smartphones for each of the four major carriers, spread across seven metropolitan areas: Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles/Orange County, New York, Seattle/Tacoma, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Washington. In every market, AT&T had faster average download speeds and had signal strength of 75 percent or better more frequently than did Verizon. (A Verizon spokesman declined to comment about these test results or those of Global Wireless Solutions.)"

"AT&T’s besting of Verizon in these tests is all the more remarkable considering the sudden jump in the volume of mobile data that its network has had to handle with the introduction of the iPhone 3G in 2008: approximately 4,000 percent."

Disclaimer: I am a ATT customer in Metro NY: I don't have dropped calls and my phone tethers at 1mbs (it's only 1.5 capable) or better in any 3G area. I don't have a iPhone either.

Ah. So AT&T is now slinging the mud at Apple when it's shown that their network is terrible.

Dear AT&T: less PR spin and more action (investment) in your network will solve your problem.

ATT is not slinging mud. A independent company who works as consultants for ATT testing their network claims that the parts in the iPhone are part of the problem. READ what it says, not what you think it says.

As posted by another person in this topic, 39 BILLION in 2 years was spent on the network, that's not chickenfeed. With a 4000% percent growth in traffic in two years, what would you have budgeted? A trillion? What if you knew it was a unfixable problem because the handset was FUBAR'd to make a few extra dollars?

Sorry but that doesn't explain all the non-iPhone users who have constant service issues with AT&T. I moved from AT&T to Verizon to get away from the daily drops with my Blackberry. A year later my employer moved me to Sprint. In the year I was with Verizon I don't recall ever having a dropped call or being unable to complete a call. In fact I was able to place calls in South Florida after hurricane Wilma had taken down many towers, while many with Bell South Mobility (now part of AT&T) were unable to place a call. With Sprint I have only had one drop in 18 months.
I have customers who report the same experience with their Blackberry service.

So while I'm not an iPhone user or a fan, don't blame Apple for AT&T's lack of investment. They had projections and experience from the early iPhone sales. They should have been upgrading 3G before the iPhone 3G even hit the market instead of waiting and whining about their users expecting to get the service they pay for.

so you have not been on ATT for at least 18 months == your experience doesn't matter anymore, lots of changes in 18 months. Even I had some problems a couple years ago.

pick it up ATT

The fact remains, VZ is giving consumers what they want for a price, while ATT gives the consumers a price but not what they want.

Its clear on the landline side also. FiOs vs Uverse we know who the winner is here.

I love my DSL is consistent but its slow, and times call for something more.
