Comments on news posted 2009-12-22 09:51:04: Users in our Bright House Networks forum note that the carrier has been pushing faster DOCSIS 3.0 speeds, including a new "Roadrunner Lightning" tier, which comes complete with 40 Mbps downstream and 5 Mbps upstream speeds and a $50 installation fee. ..

Looks like people are having issues

From the thread, it appears as though either the node or the modem are falling out of sync and only lighting up one channel instead of the three or so required to get a nice 40 Mbps DOCSIS 3.0 tier. So people are seeing closer to 20-30 Mbps, which is to be expected on a single DOCSIS channel but nowhere near the 40 Mbps that RR Lightning promises.

5 Mbps upstream is no problem though; there's only one channel there anyway.

Re: Looks like people are having issues

Agreed, my installation was a nightmare.

So much so that I decided to go back to my original 30/2mbps speeds and drop Lightning until it is ready for prime time.

Nodes in cable systems are just media converters changing light to RF and back. They can't "fall out of sync".

Maybe you mean the CMTS???

Last I checked the CMTS is the node. *shrugs*

Re: Looks like people are having issues

CMTS is a network device in the cable headend.

A node is a outdoor device hanging on the strand from the utility pole or in a ground mounted pedestal. Again it converts the signals from the optical cable to the hardline RF cable.

A single CMTS can connect to 10s or 100s of nodes. 10s or 100s of homes are serviced by 1 node.

Nodes don't show up in trace routes from cable customers, CMTSs do.

A node can't be overloaded, a CMTS can.

A node doesn't sync with a modem, a CMTS does.

A node carries the full bandwidth signal being broadcast to a neighborhood. A CMTS just handles the upstream and downstream data channels needed for cable modems to connect.

There are many other differences.

Got it. THere's a more technical name for a node though right?

Nope. It's a Node.

Here's a manual for the Arris 4100 node pictured above:

Is this upgrade coming to Central Florida?

I would love to drop my current Road Runner Turbo package and drop to this!

Re: Is this upgrade coming to Central Florida?

I am in Edgewater, FL (near Daytona Beach) on the new/upgraded 10/1 package and have been getting consistent speeds for the past few days:
Speakeasy Speedtest Last Result:
Download Speed: 13246 kbps (1655.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 939 kbps (117.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Yippee!

I sure hope this is the case. I wouldn't mind dropping my Turbo package and getting the 10/1 at the old price.

I am also in Edgewater but my download speeds have been slow - 8998 - and we are paying for he "high end" internet package. We have noticed our internet and cable both have problems when it rains. I'm considering looking into ATT but not sure if it would be any better.

I can confirm that Central Florida received this upgrade as well!
