It's better in Canada

Interesting, here in Canada a new carrier Windmobile is offering unlimited for $35 they are honest and say they may throttle you after 5gb of usage, and they allow tethering.

I signed up for data jack...

I signed up for data jack and it works great yesterday and half of today, but then when it got into the late afternoon, it always says "Connection Failed" when trying to connect and I'm using the APN they told me to use. Both of my computers are not connecting to their service and there's at least 3 bars of service with EDGE in my home and 5 bars of 3G out in the street. I called this evening but after waiting one hour in queue (even though their queue initially said it would only be 7 minutes) I finally hung up. I then called again at 9:30PM thinking the queue would be much smaller that late at night... I pressed for tech support, but someone from customer service answered (not tech support) and they put me down for a call back from a tech. I'll update later about what happens.

Re: I signed up for data jack...

By the way, yesterday (when it worked) it got 1Mbps with both EDGE and 3G in Fresno CA. Not sure why its not working today. My guess is since its not my problem (I've checked), it must be either the modem is defective that they sent me or else T-Mobile didn't like what they were seeing after the CES presentation.

Re: I signed up for data jack...

Finally got in contact with a tech at datajack and I had the wrong APN... again. The correct APN is "gne". I must have mistyped the earlier APN.

Just to give a better indication of what I'm getting here in Fresno CA... it is 500Kbps to 700Kbps with 3G at college and about 750Kbps to 1Mbps at home. This of course all depends on the time of day and how many people are using the same tower at the same time because this seems to fluctuate greatly (but always seems to be at or below 1Mbps so they must only have one T1 per tower or else they limit everyone to under 1Mbps).

When on EDGE, it is around 100Kbps to 200Kbps. But I thought for sure the other day I was getting up to 1Mbps for EDGE. In fact I'm positive.

Those wanting to know if to go with Data Jack or Cricket... go with DataJack hands down because of the much better national coverage versus Cricket. I can go up to Sacramento area when traveling and have 3G coverage.

In the Data Jack usb's software there is T-Mobile and AT&T listed as available networks to connect to. T-Mobile is the primary network it will connect to and it apparently uses AT&T only when roaming. In the software, you can specify to connect to AT&T network, however it won't let you connect to AT&T manually so AT&T is programmed in the USB modem however DataJack may not have a deal yet to go onto AT&T's network (or else the modem knows only to go on there when needed to, and not when I tell it to go manually).

Re: I signed up for data jack...

From experience with the Option 452 device.

Indicator light on device:

Green = EDGE
Blue = 3G

While poking around the device settings - I did notice that both TMobile and ATT are listed in the available networks.

Can you put an Tmobile SIM in it and have it work?

Re: I signed up for data jack...

???

A SIM card registered to the device comes with the service. I am assuming that DJ is using TMobile as the primary carrier.

Some people online have questioned if the mobile broadband device SIM can be used in a cell / smart phone - personally I don't see why anyone would want to got that route.

works well but speed may be rate limited

I've only tried the Datajack device in Ann Arbor MI, which has good 3G coverage according to T-Mobile's coverage maps

The included Option 452 USB modem works well but has no external antenna port. It includes a SIM card and MicroUSB slot.

Latency is much higher than EVDO, 250-450ms. Tethering with my Sprint phone I get 100-150ms latency (typically). Bandwidth on the card is about 900 down/ 300 up at different locations with vastly different signal strengths (rate limiting or backhaul constraints?) . All locations show HSDPA on the software monitor. Phone tethering has similar bandwidth, sometimes a little more.

I use a Mac with snow leopard and the software is seamless. The support site is minimal but the posted setup sheet is accurate. It took about 5 min to download the Option 'GlobeTrotter connect' software and change the default setup (remove username, PIN and change ARP to 'GNE'). Connection takes a few seconds.

Performance is OK for most uses, and skype calls have a little delay but generally work OK.

Has anyone gotten speeds in excess of 1Mb down?

Re: works well but speed may be rate limited

I know this topic is a month old - but if you're still reading this, could you tell me if your mac is a PowewPC, or Intel version?

I just called Datajack, and they said they only officially support intel macs. However, the support guy asked the guy next to him about powerpc connectivity, and he said he, "hooked the datajack up to his friend's computer, which is only a powerpc model, and it worked fine."

They couldn't tell me whether the powerpc needs to run a certain OS for sure. I'm running Tiger. You wouldn't happen to have a powerpc mac with Tiger that you could plug the PowerJack in and test, would you? (They have a $15 restocking fee if I buy it and it doesn't work.)

Thank you.

They use Wyless

I just got a email from them after requesting their coverage in our area. I asked them what network they used and they flat out told me "Wyless". I did some googling and found that Wyless partners with other carriers to provide service. A list of Wyless''s partners is here (warning - site links to PDF). »www.wyless.com/technicalinformat···age.html
I'm assuming you just find the nearest area on the list, and go to the carriers website to see if you really do get 3g coverage. I ordered one before all this, and it has yet to come, even though I ordered it on Sunday with next-day shipping. I need it tomorrow for a presentation. They promised me it would arrive today, but since the post (they gave me a USPS tracking number) has already come, I'm thinking it won't. They also promised me we get 3g in our area (Quad Cities, Iowa), but since T-mobile doesn't provide 3g in our area, I'm still curious. (But ATT does). I'll report back. Here's a PR article on Wyless and datajack »www.earthtimes.org/articles/show···32.shtml.

Datajack's website appears to be down

I've tried going to Datajack's website, but it's been down since yesterday. I also noticed that firefox would give a security warning about an invalid security certificate when I would click on their "My Account" tab when their website was up. Hmmm...I wonder if they went belly-up already? Anyone else know?

Re: Datajack's website appears to be down

The site is back up, however, they are not offering the device for sale, claiming they are "out of stock".

I ordered one, but have since sent it back, since I did not get over 44kpbs on the GPRS roaming...
