Comments on news posted 2010-01-13 15:40:05: Be it on wireless or wireline networks, carriers like Sprint, AT&T and Verizon have made a fine science out of burying various bogus fees below the line on your monthly bill to covertly increase your bill total. ..

I hope they do the price changing correctly. Each state has a different cellular tax.

I assume MetroPCS will eat whatever fluctuations occur in varying tax rates and fees across locales.

All I know is that come November 16th I will be leaving AT&T and Verzion for MetroPCS. I will be reducing my monthly debt by $157.98 assuming neither carrier adds anymore hidden fees to my bill.

I have been with MetroPCS for 8 months now. The GPS is great with turn by turn directions. I used it for work and I have insurance on it. Basically cost me $66 a month after tax. I suggest you purchase the SamSung Finesse.

Any smaller company has to be more honest than the big players. The question really should be will they remain honest if they grow to the size of the big players such as Verizon & At&t. Normally when you get that large you start thinking the rules don't apply to you and you can deceive the customer.

Or you just start your own fake lobbying groups, and say that grandparents in nursing homes will be unable to talk to their children (and thus wither and die, of course).

Or you just spend the money required to buy off a bunch of Washington lawmakers... (When have we ever seen that done before? )

They won't grow. Thats against MPCS/CRKT's business model. High density areas only.

Up to now there are taxes and even a fee to pay your bill. THERE IS NO WAY TO PAY YOUR BILL WITHOUT A FEE. Everything charges a fee, over the phone or internet even with a credit card. Paying at a company-owned store with cash.

I wonder if this is changing?

Yes you can pay your bill without a fee. You simply login to the site and pay via credit card. Or you can setup auto-pay similar to the previous with your credit card so you do not have to worry about it. They have free payment drop boxes at some locations. Or if worse comes to worse you can do it the old fashioned way and mail it to them. These methods are all free and require very little effort.

Payment locations charge $3 for over-the-counter payments and $2 for the machine method (similar to ATM). All of this payment information and more can be found at the link below:

I guess now it is a moot point, but the old MetroPCS plans you had to pay for everything. Voicemail was optional. Callerid was optional. Call waiting was optional.

DSL/cable should do this

I've often thought that if a large DSL/internet company would take the plunge and do this it would be a HUGE boost in goodwill that would take other companies a while to make up.

Refreshing

I used to be a MetroPCS customer, but when my usage dropped I couldn't justify the price of an unlimited plan. At the time I was on their $40 plan and with all the BS taxes and fees this was really $50.38 per month.

Nice to see that I can get that same plan back for a total of $40.00 if and when I need to go back to an unlimited plan. I still have the phone they sold me.

That's the next thing this industry needs to do: Have universally usable unlocked phones such that changing carriers doesn't require a new proprietary phone.

But then the only way they could keep customers is to offer better service or price. Not a chance that will happen. They like the cost of switching involved in your decision.

They also significantly decreased their phone prices

Looks like the slashed prices across the board by between $50 and $200. Not bad at all, considering the fact that there are no contracts involved.

Also, the $30 plan sorta sucked. $35 plan wasn't much better. $40 *is* where other unlimited providers will give you a nice plan (Pocket Communications and CricKet come to mind) but the plans are still good, and cheap compared with contract providers.

Former regional NC/SC carrier Suncom did this back in the day - I don't think it lasted long.

Re: been tried before

I had a plan from Suncom, I paid $69 and that's what they said I'd pay.

The bill had it laid out with everything itemized. And they showed you how they got to the $69. You still paid all the fees, it just conveniently added up to exactly $69.

Also don't forget Metro depends on Sprint and the other carriers for roaming. Two of their partners are NOT going LTE and one has no plans of giving up their CMDA network.

prorated charges

Verizon also prorates a partial month so that you don't get an exact idea of what the monthy charges are as well.. these companies know full well what the total price of service is including these fees by your zip code (billing address)-- but they do alot of things to hide that information from you. There should be a truth in billing law across cableco & telco alike since they are essentially in the SAME businesses now. The alternative to not having that information BEFORE you sign up a contract is to extend the 30-day cancellation to 60 days. As it is, Verizon doesn't even want you to have 30 days after 1/16/2010 (for fios).

Take it or leave it... they are not a "nationwide" carrier... they allow you roaming options, however, they don't hide that they're limited in coverage.. do they? ...no.

I can certainly see how they are "shady"...

MetroPCS has it's market.. it's for those that mainly stay in their home area that wants to be wireless.. that's it.. if you DO want to roam, yes, you're going to pay for the romaing...

If you want the full benefits of being nationwide and all the perks that come with it, then you're going to have to choose one of the carriers that has that option with little hassle.. they exist and they're not charging a flat rate with taxes included.

it's your choice... but calling them shady is a bit extreme..

Boost?!

I must be missing something- Boost has been doing this for awhile now with their $50 unlimited talk/text/web plan. $50 really means just $50.

When I was shopping around for a cell phone I looked at Cricket and Metro PCS..ON Metros website, their coverage map covers my area, but when I enter my zip code, they say my area isn't covered..so I went with Cricket their website actually ain't broke.

Our ISP has always done this.

We've never had hidden fees. And has DSL Reports praised us for it? Nope. Instead, they've criticized us for containing costs so we could keep it that way.

Metro PCS cell site

Metro PCS installed a mini cell site on the phone pole right in front of my house-I imagine that my home coverage would be pretty good.

LoL!! I'll be paying a dime more!

$50.00, instead of $49.90/month... No problem!

Been a MetroPCS customer ever since Cingular bought the "real" ATT Wireless, and tried to stick us with new phones and rate plans. Seeing firsthand how Cingular's GSM service was a poor replacement from ATTws' TDMA here (shut down when the "Borging" was complete), I decided to check out other carriers.

With my ol Nokia 6360 still up and running, and after a few "I know this great bar in the boondocks"--(now, can you get service there, hehe) trips with a few friends, I found I could try Metro PCS' service for a month, and figured I could resell the phone I needed to buy on Craigslist, for minimal loss (which I did!). After multiple instances of friends borrowing it when their new Cingular phone was without a signal, I kept their service, and *did* sell the (cheap) Nokia, after getting a 6265i, which I just replaced last week. (with a Motorola QA30)

Bottom line:

The Good:
Straightforward, flat, unmetered rates. Its nice to be able to talk to clients, tell them every mouse-click they have to do to get "it" done, and not have to worry how many 1000's of minutes I've used that month.

Service, darn good service, everywhere I tend to be. When somewhere else (i.e., Yerington, Nevada), I found the money spent on roaming to be so far total less than the cost of a decent pizza.

I've always had a 45-50 buck-a-month service with them, and in 3 or so years, keep getting more for it, some things are gimmicks, some are truly handy.

The Temporarily Annoying:
They tend to place icons, etc., for extra-charge stuff (like @metro) in prominent places on their phones. However, that is what Nokia Diego (and whatever the Motorola equiv is) are for

Go to a "company store" for your dealings... I'll leave that at that.

The Bad:
Nothing so far... Else I'd probably be with Verizon.

To this day I still can't believe we don't

have some sort of law forcing companies to tell us EXACTLY what they are charging us

I mean, why is it so far-fetched to want to give the customer notice of exactly what they are buying at what price?

I mean, am I crazy?
