Cable DOCSIS 3 performance tune

Looks like we don't need those cable modem hacking stuff on the old earlier DOCSIS 1.x, 2.0 after we had DOCSIS 3 available here implanted on mostly newer modern cable modem and computer user only need is to tweak within the system of win2000, XP OS over TCP slack on either IP4 or IP6 slack layer. I hope that cable mod hacker will go to prison hole with very tiny cell for good and it will be rest of his life in that hole.

wow

If you post you tube videos on how to do something illegal, and then sell devices that steal, I'm sorry but you are asking to be arrested. how stupid can you be?

@comcast.net

he had it cmoing

cable modems wasn't the only thing this guy was selling. also he openly advertised his products as being used for illegal purposes.

you can sell bongs in america as long as you claim its for tobacco use. as soon as you start advertising it as something to smoke drugs with though you can end up in jail for it.

same situation applies here.

this guy was warned multiple times by people in the 'hacking community' that he would be arrested and he said he didn't give a fuck. i guess we will really see if he doesn't give a fuck about possibly spending 20 yrs in prison.

greed and ignorance is what got this guy arrested. i don't feel too sorry for him.

You can't sell bongs in my county. No matter what the use would be for. They outlawed that sometime in the 90's I always wondered what took them so long to finally wise up and outlaw them.

I find it odd..

I wonder why the FBI is so aggressive with cable modem hackers. You don't see these kinds of arrests on those that hack satellite TV. Satellite hacking is just as open and in plain view as these cable modem hacks.

Bigger fish to fry

I can think of about 10,834 things MORE important the FBI should be doing than taking out ONE guy that sells illegal cable modems. Good job feds, I can sleep tons safer tonight!

I wish..

Wish that people would stop putting words into other peoples mouths.. No one is saying that its ok to steal cable but just that the cable companies should at least try to fix this problem on their end before whining to the FBI about it.

Cloned Cable Modems

All these methods have one thing in common: the need to present a valid MAC address to the provider by the modem.

So, you've stumbled upon the MAC for a customer who is paying top dollar for the cablecos maximum speed service. Your modem appears on line and authenticates. Wow, you've got high speed! Meanwhile, somewhere in town the sub who's actually paying for the service is no longer getting any. Since the MAC address is supposed to be unique (router manufacturers whose products clone MAC IDs should BURN IN HELL for the troubleshooting problems they cause, but that rant is for a future post), the legit customer calls for help. Tech support, being under call time constraints, clears and reboots the modem, the sub is back online and everyone's happy (for about 10 minutes).

The owner of the modded modem notices that his torrents (be it Linux ISOs, pornography, freeware, or yesterday's hot movie release) have stopped. So he reboots his modem, bringing it back online and once again knocks the paying subscriber offline again. The circle repeats itself until a tech support rep notices that the sub has been calling EVERY day. The cableco then exchanges the modem and the sub gets a new MAC and is finally working properly again. The MAC address is flagged and no longer works on that cablecos system. The modder then searches for another valid MAC and the process starts all over again. I've seen nodes where the number of cloned MACs is 10 times the number of legitimate ones (Miami Florida comes to mind) - requiring work to clear them out. Don't forget each connection attempt wastes another IP from the DHCP server and increases the overhead eventually impacting the service to all the customers.

There's one other real danger. If the cloned MAC belongs to a cable/voice modem (Motorola SBV5222) or worse, a subscriber using VOIP like Vonage, that subscriber no longer has phone service. It's just a matter of time until someone dies because they could not call 911 in an emergency. "Excuse me, [Mr. Armed Robber/Mr. Rapist], I need to reboot my modem so that I may call for assistance. My cell phone has 0 bars hence I cannot use it either. Could you hold on a while before continuing your felony?"

What's the cost for this? Multiple calls to tech support tying up the rep who should be working on a legitimate problem, truck rolls to exchange the "bad" modem, the cableco buying additional modems to replace the "bad" ones (yes, I know that they can be reused again eventually). My cableco charges $25 or $30 for a truck roll, and if you think that covers the cost you'd better recheck your math. And we can't charge the paying subscriber since the problem was not of his making.

There are real costs involved every time this happens. Who pays for the increased overhead? Not the cable company, not its stockholders/owners, not the modder. The honest paying subscriber pays it through increased bills. The next time you complain about your ever-rising bill, remember that a portion of that bill is subsidizing that modders' service.

We all want fast internet service, and we all want it at a reasonable price. But in the end, most of the cost isn't expended on the cost of moving those packets to and from the backbone, it's the costs to maintain and support the local end.

My cable company is changing the process involved in authenticating the modem's access, but once again those changes cost money. Dishonesty costs all paying customers.

Re: Cloned Cable Modems

From what i have read if the cloned MAC is on a different node then the original wouldn't get kicked off,if someone tried with a MAC from that same node servicing the area then the original one would get kicked off and the process would repeat like you said.

How do they expect not to get arrested if they openly sell hacked modems in their own websites?

I'm not sure either? cablehack.net and theoryshare.com seem to be doing the exact same things...
