FIOS has provided alot of fiber to customers. Millions of people have 50/20mbit.
But Im still stuck with my not quite 2mbit connection. Sure I could get cable but then I also get a cap.

Ultimately, I think Google wants the hard data to show that this model works. They won't be sued by the big ILEC/MSOs and if they are, have the capital to laugh it off.
If Google can show that this model works by increasing speeds, increasing competitiveness, and accomplishes both of those at a reasonable cost, the duopoly won't have a leg to stand on when they claim it costs too much to deliver this kind of speed and connectivity to the home.

ya know even talk to WIND and teksavvy this would if they act as dumb pipe and either have massive high caps or none at all would be the start of a push on BCE and rogers and even shaw and telus
go talk to novus and nexicom all the lil bit players that have lil spots around and offer a buyin deal ...... get jeremy to work ....good stuff man not taking that 50 million bribe from MS on your Samba work....
thats the kinda people google is hiring....

| Correction: if they can't lobby Google out of existence on this, they will lower prices to compete, as long as Google prices their service competitively. If Google offers the service for $70 per month where TWC's packages end at $60 then TWC probably won't change things much. If Google offers it for $50 though TWC and others will have smoking deals on slower access. | |
|
| | "competitive prices" What exactly can we expect those to be? For example, we have here in NYC, 100Mb for roughly $100(OptimumUltra). Are we going to see the prices at say, $200/mo for gigabit, $500/mo? What? | |

| Re: "competitive prices" Probably not. That wouldn't be like Google. I'd bet on $50 per month. If you're digging fiber you can start out big as long aas you own the last, middle and backbone miles. Google owns their own backbone and has plenty of inbound capacity, so the bandwidth side of things for them is essentially free. What remains is the middle and last miles, but if they can swing that they can go whole hog. | |
|
| | Moving the market forward I can see Google leading the market into the next generation of internet speeds. They did it with Gmail (who else was offering 1GB email storage for free when it started?) , why not FTTH? | |

I get charged $30 a month for a pathetic 1mb DSL connection from AT&T. Go to hell. It's also embarrassing that we're number 38th in the world as far as internet speeds. Two of the largest U.S. ISPs refuse to deploy to everyone in this country and now want to nickle and dime subscribers for every single thing they do and are against net neutrality?!>!#@

| Re: Thank You Correction: Comcast is reasonably fast on downloads, slowish on uploads, and capped so that the top 1% have to pay more (bi class) or go elsewhere. It also costs a fair bit of money considering the connection speed you get.
Whereas Google's fiber is RIDICULOUSLY fast on downloads and uploads, and will be priced "competitively" which means they'll have much more bang for the buck vs. Comcast.
Comcast isn't bad here, but things could be a lot better. Heck, I'd love a 25/25 fiber connection, let alone a gig!

| plenty of choices on where there are plenty of city, suburb and rural locations where the top dozen cable and telco companies refused to upgrade and/or deploy their network. what will be nice to see is at least 1/4th of that fiber deep in the heart of qwest land to show them (in the south west) how it's done RIGHT. next, locate some gigabit fiber in the top dozen or so markets to force the big 12 companies to lower prices for stand-alone internet. after that, then you can have the have-not lottery of where the balance goes. | |

| Re: plenty of choices on where Agreed. In the Denver metro Qwest has VDSL in a few locations, but otherwise is limited to 6/700 on real world speeds by using old ADSL technology. Comcast sweeps up the rest of the customers and you pay in spades for the privelege of internet that
a) works b) is fast
My internet-only installation fee was $100. On top of that you either buy an $80 DOCSIS 3 modem (or a $20 DOCSIS 2 modem if you look in the right place) or rent one for $5 per month. Counting the modem rental fee, Comcast's 12/2 tier is a whopping $60 per moth. If you want 5 Mbps of upload speed and don't have your own modem the cost is $80. 50/10 is a little over $120 when you figure in the modem cost.
In San Antonio and Austin, TX prices are a bit better que to competition. Grande Communications has 15/4 fiber for I think $50 in certain locations. TWC has 15/2 cable everywhere for $50. That said, if you want more than 15/2 prices go up quickly. I believe AT&T's 24/3 VDSL service is either $65 or $75 per month. If you want more than 3 Mbps up, or the prospect of more than 5 Mbps up (TWC's 50/5 $100 tier will be coming to San Antonio soonish) you move to cooperative-land and get GVTC 40/10 for $95 with a year contract, or $100 without one.
Houston has Comcast, which is slowly deploying DOCSIS 3 there, and U-Verse. Entouch is another provider there, but I think they don't go above about 22 Mbps.
Hopefully Google lays down fiber in an area where cable is competing with DSL with no residential fiber in sight, so the cable/DSL providers have to compete on price or jack up speeds...or switch to Google fiber as their means of getting to customers' homes. Only time will tell what approach they take...
|
| | But bandwidth is so expensive I am waiting for the shills to chime in saying how this is impossible and bandwidth is as expensive as a house purchase.
