I should pay to improve THEIR network?

I don't mind paying a modest rental fee for the femto cell, but I shouldn't have to pay one cent to use it. I'm relieving the burden on their tower and making their service better for everyone else using that tower. Hell, they should pay me to use it!

I have a Verizon femtocell...

I purchased a Verizon femtocell off Craigslist for $120, about half of what they are selling them for.

For me it made sense because cell coverage at home sucks, constantly dropping calls and allowed me to ditch Vonage and save $30 / month.

While there aren't any monthly fees, the fact that it eats your cell minutes is total crap. I only have 450 minutes because I don't feel like paying over $70 / month for cell and phone internet access.

I just bought a Nettalk VOIP adapter and while they have some things to work out, it's a better deal than Vonage or MagicJack. I paid $100 for the device with no monthly fees. What I really like besides no monthly fee is you can connect it via USB like MagicJack or via ethernet directly to your router so you don't have to have your computer on to make or receive calls. For me, that was the deal breaker with MagicJack.

Just my $.02.

Might as well wait for LTE Femtocells

With the major carriers all starting their conversions to LTE, might as well wait until the currently being developed LTE Femtocells are ready:

what?!?

so they are charging me minutes if i use a cell phone over their towers

AND

they are charging me minutes if i use a femtocell tower at home - to redirect to my broadband

AND

they are charging me bytes on my broadband connection

Is the femtocell managed - can I prevent anyone from using it - or is it just "one touch" so my neighbors can use it also?

Or, is that a violation of the TOS (sharing connections with friends)

So confused!

Re: what?!?

With AT&T's you select up to 10 numbers that are allowed to use it and 4 can use it at one time

What about caps??

I live in Reno nv and AT&T has caps on their Internet so I have to pay monthly for overage on my dsl line and pay for the device as well as a monthly service fee for service??? WTF might as well go to someone else or buy a repeater.

Why not build out certain homes in bad signal areas that can get fast dsl with a second dsl line and a femtocell. Maybe every 4 homes and put descreet antenna on their roofs?? Or even apartment buildings. Would be cheaper to do that and offer discounted svc then rent out space on a tower

here's a great idea...

...build more towers and invest in the back haul! It makes no sense that I because I have a weak signal that drops in my own home I need to buy their equipment AND pay additional monthly charges for it??? What's next? Are they going to start ripping towers out to justify their crusade?

Too late....

Perhaps some AT&T Mobility users have received some sort of flyer notifying them of the 3G MicroCell, but not me.

I grew tired of waiting for a decent signal in my home, so I installed a WiEx repeater. It works great, and unless the AT&T device is totally free, I am no longer interested (even if it were totally free, I probably would not dedicate my bandwidth to it since my WiEx repeater does not require bandwidth).

To answer the "why didn't you switch to Verizon, T-Mobile, etc" question. I have neighbors with other services, and they also have signal problems at this location.

Today, I received this announcement/offer from AT&T telling me that the 3G MicroCell was now available:

When I checked on their web site, I was told otherwise.

AT&T - Cancer Bonanza

I like the whole debate on price...lolol....how about the debate on everyones health !!! Has anyone stopped to concider what a "mini-cell tower" (electromagnetic interferance) does to your brain and body ??! You do realise that cell phones and cordless phone cause brain tumors ? Right ? Can you imagine what ALL these "wireless" toys are doing to your bodies ??

Re: AT&T - Cancer Bonanza

Actually, if you live where you have a lousy cell signal, your phone adjusts to maximum power to talk to the tower. With a femtocell, it can reduce the power because the signal is stronger. Bottom line: A strong "tower" signal reduces the power that the phone next to your head has to poop out--a good thing.

This is cancer in a jar

Get with it folks. Wireless technology is a major cause of the rapid increase in many types of cancer. Now they want people to put it right in their bedrooms!

EMF protection from Tachyon deals with this. Most advanced and effective technology I know of. Dr. Gabriel cousens on the Board of directors, legit stuff

One word: MagicJack

MagicJack is the way. If you have not used it yet, you will be amazed when you do. Better quality and much cheaper than Skype. The MagicJack has its own processor that seems to make clearer calls than Skype. When I first used it, I still had my landlines. After a month of using MagicJack, I realized that the quality of MagicJack was better than the landlines and far less expensive.

As long as you don't mind having your computer slow to a crawl because MJ is doing, God knows what, in the background. Oh, and don't shut that computer down. If you do, MJ won't work. Yea..great solution.

I've had zero issues with the VOIP Magic Jack. I also use that at home if I get close to my 450 minute limit from Verizon.
I've used Magic Jack with several Desktops, Laptops, and Netbooks with WinXP, Vista and Win7. It's worked perfectly on every PC and nevers slows it down.

Stop moaning: seems a very good deal to me

I have coverage problems at home: specifically in my home office I often miss calls. Missed call = missed business.

So if I can get coverage then I want it.

Why shouldn't it use my plan? I pay for a call, I'm using a call.

You lot saying "it should be free" is like saying Ford should give me the car for free cos I pay for gas.

Or $20 a month looks a REALLY good deal. I can reduce my plan and shift to a cheaper one: I work from home, so a lot of my plan is from home = free calls.

It isn't just me: wife & three kids all with phones. Femto will work for all of them. $4/month each for free calls. What are you moaning about?

Oh yeah, and if my cell worked at home and free calls then I'd get rid of landline too.

Very Close To Launch?

The headline for this story said they indicated they are close to launch, but it said nothing about that in the story! So when are they expected to see a nationwide launch of this service?

getting close...

I'm so desperate that I'd spend my own minutes if they'd give me the unit for free. I clearly won't spend $20/month to get coverage that I already pay for. I'm one of those ATT "light orange" coverage types - ie. zero to one bar.
