Comments on news posted 2010-03-11 13:40:34: Back in March of last year a company by the name of OnLive unveiled their new broadband gaming service, which aims to replace the traditional game console with what's essentially a broadband-connected dumb terminal. ..

Game Pricing

I can't find anything about game pricing so that leads me to believe that publishers will set the prices like in Steam.

If that is true, you can expect regular $60 price tags on top of your $15 a month. I wonder how much rentals will cost?

think yearly- 180$ a year

FAIL
yup think that each year you have now to pay 180$ and that means if you buy more then that in a year ok deal to you

but like most of us who are really picky
its a no brainier.

Re: think yearly- 180$ a year

An Xbox 360 or Wii are both $200, so this is not much cheaper hardware speaking.

Plus for Onlive the hardware cost goes on forever until you end the service, with the game console's it's one time.

Agreed, I'd sooner stick with the xbox 360.
Currently they're selling for $125 @ walmart here in Canada.

Mod that console yourself(jungleflasher + lite touch), burn your own games for around $1/each on dual layer dvds and even if you get banned once a year(thus requiring a new box every yearly ban wave) AND pay full price for a yearly subscription to XBL it's still right around the same price just to get in the door for onlive...

For me it's a no brainer for sure, xbox is far superior.
Now even if you didn't mod your system to get your games nearly free and went legit...

You get the console for $125 and a 13 months of xbox live for around $60 (or less) and your still in the right price range and you get to play your games even if the servers go down, and have the privilege of OWNing your games on a disc.

If they wanted to do this right, the console itself would've been less than $100 to buy outright and buy your games separately via a system like steam OR have the ability to buy it outright for the same price but then pay a yearly fee for all you can eat gaming(kinda like netflix).

Re: There web site says No big download or installs. 720P is not

It's a very small download for the player if anything. It's really just a video player for the video (which is what the big download IS) and something that accepts commands.

Gamestorm

Gamestorm was a gaming service that went out of business about 10 years ago ( EA bought it and then shut it down ) that offered probably 100 games or so all for a low price of 9.95 a month.

It was just a bunch of crappy games either.. It carried some of the first FPS , Air Combat and the best Online RPG ever created ( Legends of Kesmai ).

Other games were Air Warrior , Magestorm , Aliens Online , Starship Troopers , Silent Death Online , Virtual Pool..ect.

So OnLive wants me to pay 14.95 for nothing? I would rather keep playing an MMO since I would get something for that 14.95.

Need more bandwidth...

According to the article it says that only HD Gaming streams will be available. None of my DSL ISPs will give me anything faster than 3Mbps even though the lines can hold 5Mbps speeds, which means I'll need to go to Cable or wait until FiOS arrives to even use this. Plus, I already calculated/estimated the amount of "input lag" I would get on OnLive compared to gaming on my hand built desktop, and considering a maxed out line plus the poor routing I get sometimes, add in processing times and input lag and you might be looking at around 250 or so ms of input lag time. Certainly nothing to be playing a shooter on, but this could also be high too.

But obviously, this service is geared towards users who don't want to pay for hardware and deal with the troubles it may come, or in the case of PC gaming, want to shy away from the initial cost of a PC. For the hardcore gamers such as I, owning the hardware and being on top of the competition in terms of power will always prevail.

Wrong time, wrong place

This is better off being released in Japan due to the size of the country and the quality of their broadband service.

America is not in the state where something like this should be coming out right now. Until the FCC gets their act together and changes America's internet for the better, this service will be biased to just a few ISPs and a very low number of consumers.

It won't pay for itself until 2012.

Until the miracle that this service actually forces an earlier change in quality broadband penetration, I'll stick with my viewpoint of "wrong time, wrong - yet also right - place".

FAIL!

What a stupid product and at the worst time to release when people are trying to cut down on cost in a recession. Not only is it expensive, but you better pray that your ISP has no bandwidth caps which most ISP's do now.

Streaming a damn game over broadband? Just friggin buy it on your PS3/XBOX 360 for $40-50 bucks and have a full copy.

Specs Anyone?

What's the specs of the console? If we knew more about the specs, we'd know more about the games.

Good Hardware usually means good games because of the capability of the console.
Crap Hardware.. Well, you know..

Meh...

1) no 1080p

2) internet lag = controller lag

3) not portable to places with no or insufficient internet access (no internet connection = no games)
