More hype

Pardon me if I view this 3D TV bravado as just hype. It's 35-40 Mbps per channel to deliver that feed, not to mention the costs of the TV, plus those silly glasses.

Bring it on!

I'm all for it. Nothing to dislike with 3DTV, it's something new, and I think the the 3D movies in the theaters, like Avatar, look really cool.

I'm looking forward to 3DTV.

Re: More hype

35-40mbits is twice the bandwidth of a blu-ray, TV, not even 4D, takes up that much space. Realistically, it doesn't take more bandwidth because it does the side by side broadcast thing, which is still the same res. Cable companies just can't compress it too much because massive macroblocking would totally trash the 3D effect.

Bad timing?

I just don't think this will take off. Most people haven't gotten a HDTV yet, or did not too long ago. HDTVs have come down in price, Blu-Ray is becoming more adopted (but still nowhere near the adoption rate of dvd), and now they want to offer a new expensive tv technology with a 1950's gimmick in the midst of a horrible recession? Yes I know the technology is better than it was back then but still I'd personally have to say meh...

Re: More hype

Well, 35-40 Mbps sounds like a full 256QAM channel to me so the 6MHz figure is spot-on.

What's funny is that AT&T U-Verse will be unable to offer 3D with any decent quality, since their DSL profiles are for 19/2, 25/2 or 32/5 Mbps...none reach 35 Mbps!

Actually 3DTV is two streams so it will take up 2x the bandwidth of a regular HD signal.

Umm, 35-40 mbits IS the bandwidth of a Blu-ray, and there are already many channels broadcasting at that bitrate or higher, it's called C BAND / Big Ugly Dish.

Re: 3D?

The TV itself is over $2000 the glasses on average are another $350+ on average and are made by Samsung along with the TVs and the Blu-Ray players. Sony hasn't released one yet and hasn't made any announcements on if they plan on it.

And Comcast will probably find some way to squeeze this one 3 per QAM.

wow

Verizon can say what they want but wasnt cablevision one of the first to offer any hd at all? Also up until recently cablevision had some of the highest online speeds in the country.

Also cablevision is sending out a survey for $29 cell service unlimited voice , text, data with android and iphone like phones that use cell service and wifi .

I do not see verizon doing that .

So verizon can send out all the press releases they want but considering they completely stopped fios deployment they cant really talk.

Re: Bad timing?

That's right, no HDTV here. SDTV FTW since you can get large CRT TV's for free these days since people are giving them away so they can enjoy all those crappy shows, movies, repeats, and commercials in HD. Only those tiny HDTV's are cheap and when you get into the 32 inch and up range it's ripoff city. I want at least a 32 incher in my home but it's just not worth buying to see all of those annoying TV commecials in HD.

Re: DO NOT WANT!!!

I'm sure Comcast would love to provide you with some 1080p channels, one problem though, NONE EXIST! There is no channel broadcasting in 1080p, and probably won't be for some time. Sure they could do the 1080p On Demand gimmick like the stupid satellite companies are doing, but is wacthing a movie once in 1080p really worth $6 (Plus the $10/month HD Rape fee), when you can buy it on BD for $20 and own it for life.

Craprizon is just a little hot under the collar they didn't think of 3D for their vastly inferior Fios service first. But like everything that shitty company does, they'll come out with it and they hype it up like it's the best thing since sliced bread and come out with commercials saying how great their overrated products and services are.

Hmmm...

I know!! 3D is a total gimmick and I for one will not be tricked into using it. I also wasn't fooled by those OTHER gimmicks, color and sound. I like my movies to be presented properly: in grainy black and white with someone playing a piano in the corner. Those other things are just gimmicks!

Okay, sarcasm mode *OFF*. For those folks who have a deeper awareness of history other than the past few years, every single technological innovation is viewed as a "gimmick" by the majority, the ones who feel that the world sprang into place when THEY first become aware of it and should thus remain unchanged. For those people I humbly share a bit of history.

Color TV? Who needs color? And video recorders are a TOTAL joke. Why would anyone spend money on a machine that records TV shows? Just watch the rerun! Okay, maybe videotape IS a good idea...but laserdiscs? DVDs? Are you crazy? You can't even record on them.

But let's talk about audio for a moment. When stereo was first introduced, the audiophiles of the era were in an uproar. TWO channels!? That's an absurd gimmick! Proper audio playback required one channel and one speaker only! Ironically, the same folks who pioneered stereo were the first to cry "gimmick" when quad (and later surround sound) was introduced. Four channels!? Five? SIX?? You only need two! Everything else is conspicuous consumption!

No, everything else is PROGRESS. 3D is reaching a saturation point that will put it conveniently within reach of the masses. In ten years, I suspect quite a few current-headscratchers will have 3D in their house.

And there's quite a bit of misinformation on this page about 3D. Here's a nice FAQ that corrects a lot of misconceptions:

But how many people will pay $15 + a $3-$5 3D fee for a Porn video?

You may want to do a little more research on this before posting further. The only part you have right is the TV price, and there are TV's below $2000 as well.

Re: DO NOT WANT!!!

I'm sorry but did I ever claim there was a 1080p signal? I just stated I would rather have 1080p before they give me 3D.

I guess my point is that I was unmodified re-transmission of the show in its native resolution. No more of this mpeg-4 recoding so quality shows get the downrez just to make room for 100 more shopping channels and religious junk channels.

In fact, I don't even want to subscribe to any SD content anymore. HD or nothing please.
