Comments on news posted 2010-07-16 14:34:14: Apple this afternoon gave a presentation to address the iPhone 4's antenna problems. This really was the time for Apple to be be concise, candid, apologize, and fix the issue. Instead, the company wound up sounding like AT&T. ..
I think the summary is too hard on Apple. After all, this HAS to be the first time they've willingly fessed up to one of their products having a major problem in such a public way.
Apple did the right thing by offering the free cases. At the very least it buys them time to come up with a permanent fix to this problem.
Jobs comments about reevaluating on Sept 30 hints that a manufacturing change may be in the works. But he WILL NOT admit that in public because it would freeze iPhone 4 purchases until the redesigned model was available. IF they have a hardware change, it won't be announced until the old inventory has cleared thru the marketing channels. -- Are you happy with your rep in Washington, DC?
"What they got was a free case, some high grade bullshit, some waffling on whether or not the problem is even real, some whining about the press, and a slideshow."
The next few days will be telling. Lets see what other new sources have to say regarding this show. -- Politicians and diapers have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly, and for the same reason.
They built the thing with the antenna as the chassis. When you touch it, it's no longer tuned to the right wavelength and its performance drops. This can't be fixed in software or firmware, hell you can't even fix it by taking the back off and cutting traces.
Avoiding conductive material from touching the antenna is a mitigation of the issue, and if the customers are satisfied with that solution, then so be it.
Apple was taking things too far when they said that every phone has this problem. True, but not to this degree. I can hold my "Droid" wrong and get poorer performance due to detuning the antenna via coupling, but I'm still not in direct contact with its antenna which detunes it because it's now electrically the wrong size for the wavelength.
The bezel being the antenna means the antenna is really big. Lots and lots and lots of wavelengths involved relative to the frequencies involved. Your touching it has about the same affect as a flat patch antenna in a plastic case being parallel to your hand except your hand can actually block the signal along with coupling to it's output.
Obviously you aren't clueless on the matter of antennas but the best antennas on paper don't always perform better than the basic ones and when it comes to antennas that are software switched then the software plays a big role in the antenna too.
Personally I think it was a dumb idea when the back of the phone was glass they could of did patch antennas under it or even within the glass itself but that doesn't mean the idea they designed doesn't work as intended. -- Say no to JAMS!
No one cares when the back up punter on the worst team screws up or has issues. But when the starting QB on the super bowl winning team does, look out!
So what, they have an issue, they admitted they do, whether they way they did was right or wrong, who cares. Move on, find something else to write about. This is getting old.
As I have said before, I love my iPhone, it works good, for me and what I do. I really don't care what you prefer or why you hate Apple. -- Women think they are clever just because they can fake an orgasm for a relationship, whats the big deal a man can fake a whole relationship for an orgasm!!!!
And they managed to prove many other phones have the issue.
Sounds like someone bought Jobbs' bullshit.
Sorry, but while all phones w/ internal antennas can experience attenuation, other independant testers (most notably Consumer Reports) noted that the iPhone 4's case was more severe (about 2x the normal attenuation).
ROFL this is what I expected from APPLE in the first place, NO im not a Iphone fanboy But Im NOT a apple Hater ether. this is just unfortunately the common business practice ( I said it before and Ill say it again). Karl was right it's exactly what Apples PR & ATT would or told them to do, ADMIT NOTHING, LIE THROUGH YOUR BUTT, BRING UP $HIT TOTAL IRRELEVANT! except for the part about getting out of your ATT contract, that part was golden..I can hear the NNNNOOOOO from the side curtain as they saw this answer coming!
I think this phrase from aliens vs. Monsters sums up apple at best.... This place is an X-file, wrapped in a cover-up and deep-fried in a paranoid conspiracy! LOL
1. Apple demonstrated it on other phones. But, no one actually cares about other phones, so this is only an issue with an iPhone
2. You disappoint me. The title is unoriginal and unprofessional. In fact, one of the main reasons I spend time on this site is because despite your "I hate AT&T" slant, you usually do a good job of sharing facts and being professional about it. Instead, now you can only come up with cuss words (which I use often) instead really diving into what happened today at the press conference.
In summary, I'm disappointed, I've come to expect more out of this forum and your writing.
When a site devoted to political topics goes after Apple & Jobs and the stock drops 7%, Apple has entered in to unfamiliar territory for them. And that is they are no longer just a company loved by fanboys and techno-nerds. Open season has been declared on just another BIG BAD CORPORATION.
And Consumer Reports highlighted that it absolutely does not impact previous iPhone models. This is a specific design flaw in iPhone 4.
You disappoint me. The title is unoriginal and unprofessional.
I never claimed to be original or professional. Just honest. And this PR effort today was garbage. I mean look how disgusted Steve is with the very notion he should make amends for a company design flaw:
haha "all smart phones suffer from this problem if held a certain way"
okay, I agree... if you hold my blackberry a certain way (held from top to bottom, rather then the sides) and tilt my head at a weird angle, I get this problem, er okay, not really.. but for sake of argument we will just say this is true. If I hold it the correct way (held from sides) and my head in a normal position, It works perfectly.
Now with the Iphone 4, I have to do the opposite of the Blackberry... it works perfect if I hold it from top to bottom and tilt my head in a very weird position........ and if held normally by the sides, and my head in the normal position, I get dropped calls.... Yep.. all phones suffer from this, except all other smart phones are designed to work correctly when used in the correct position..
Build a handset with a real antenna. Get the RF energy up and away from the user's hand.
That is how they made cellphones in the past. But now "how pretty" and "how thin" and "how light" aesthetics trumps function. And people buy them overwhelming over the ugly functional ones. So that is what vendors make. -- Are you happy with your rep in Washington, DC?
I posted this in another forum but I thought it was fitting-
quote:Q: Is there a hardware redesign in this generation that could fix this problem? Steve: But not everyone is seeing this -- a small number encounter it. For those customers we'll get them a case, and if that doesn't work, we'll get them a full refund. And we'll continue to work on antennas that don't have this problem. But I think we're where the rest of industry is right now.
You gotta love that mindset, when he revealed the iphone 4 he went on and on about how it is some huge game changer and how they are industry leaders yet when it comes to a fault they are just fine with being with the rest of the pack. No challenge to be better, no incentive to push themselves to be the best they can, nope, being dead in the middle "like everyone else" is just dandy with them. It sounds like Jobs kind of enjoys blowing smoke up peoples asses as long as he can.
I mean I know Apple is all about marketing that is what sells some of their old technology as "new" and "inventive" when in reality it is far from that but I thought Apple was the house on the hill and the ones who were suppose to be leaders. Sounds like they only want to do that when it is convenient to them.
Please Mr. Jobs every PDA has this problem, I smell BS. I have the Droid Incredible and I never had any sort of issues with reception by holding it a certain way. I guess what Darth Jobs sezz is good as gold to the Apple Sheep.
