Comments on news posted 2010-09-02 10:02:24: While that new Virgin Mobile $40 unlimited prepaid data plan looks great on the surface, users in our forums note that they're having a lot of problems not only ordering the plan, but actually using the plan for web browsing. ..

Bring back the $20 plan

300 Mb for 30 days. It's all I needed using a netbook. Can you hear me now, Virgin?
Yes, data sucks unless your next to a tower. But hey, it's Sprint..roaming on Verizon's network. 'nough said

Re: Bring back the $20 plan

I would assume the majority of the people whining about how bad VM's service is (and it being down) are AT&T/Verizon fanboys that don't actually have VM service, lol.

Re: Bring back the $20 plan

Naw, I think the majority of people complaining are the ONES WHO HAVE THE devices, and have near dial-up web browsing.....

I would guess a lot of the problems with VM Data wireless...

...Are related to the following things:

1) Everybody who has gotten it recently is doing speed tests to see how fast it runs. I am guilty of this.

2) They are getting many people who are running a lot of data through it to see how much data can be run through it. Again, I am guilty.

3) They had a bunch of new users who are slowing down everything with their "new user" usage.

I will give them a few weeks to speed up things (although today I was getting over 700 kbps down, and 400 kbps up).

Nevermind that this is much better than paying for overpriced wifi at a hotel or airport, and once I got my modem swapped out (the first one kept dropping my wifi connection), it seems to remain connected at least, just not as fast as I would have expected.

I don't know, if you don't travel much you only pay $10 for wifi but most places have free wi-fi.

bring back the $20/30 day option, or change $10 to 30 days

really annoying to have the mifi plan price hiked after only two months. I have no need for unlimited, but need more than 10 days at a time, so full month coverage now costs $30 for 300 MB and you have to sign up three times to keep it going. There's no reason to 'expire' the limited minutes after such a shot time period, other than to force users to the $40 a month plan, which is $240 a year more than I expected to spend when I bought the device two months ago. Now, crappy service to boot has me second guessing the decision. After the first few weeks of excellent service, which I admit seemed slow at the time (2.5 Mbps download) the past week I was lucky to get 20 kbps. This is unusable. I would check today, but my minutes have expired.... wasn't able to use them because the throughput was so lousy, so I lost about half my allotment for last month. I may try again, but now feel I need to start looking for other options for daily access and will save the mifi for emergencies. I like VM and use their phones, but this mifi/data plan clearly is a work in progress.

Poor Speeds in Chicago

I got in on the $119 MiFi deal at Wal-Mart. It's a cool device and it was really easy to set up.

My hopes were high for this service, but unless I am literally a city block or less from a Sprint tower I can't get any faster than ~250kbit/sec. At my home in the Chicago suburbs I usually get less than 100kbit and in my office in downtown Chicago it's worse.

I entered a help desk ticket online two days ago and didn't get a response. I did, however, get a response from VirginMobile's Twitter person:

...our IT team is working on increasing speeds across the board - we hope to have this up by the end of next week.
Let's hope so.

Re: Poor Speeds in Chicago

Lots of people (including myself)..

notice regular "full" speed with a SPRINT device connecting to a SPRINT TOWER.

However, with a VM device, speeds are slower using the SAME tower, and practically the SAME device as the sprint one.

The Sprint device is the Novatel U760, and the VM is the MC760 (same device actually, modified for the provider.)

There seems to be some type of traffic shaping or throttling after the connection bounces into the VM network.

No way that two similar devices connecting to the SAME tower could have such speed and performance differences if Virgin Mobile wasn't throttlling their devices.

After all, how can they offer "unlimited" at "full speeds".
there is not that much tower capacity without some type of restriction or limitation!

Big improvement today

It seems Sprint did some improvements to the VM network last night. This morning my Mifi is showing that is it connected to the Sprint PCS network and the overall throughput is much improved. Speedtest for me here in FL peaked at 2Mbps/500kbps. Yesterday I was seeing 200kbps/80kbps if I was lucky.

Happy with the MiFi

I was frustrated with the service too in the beginning. Slow speeds and very frequent random disconnects. I was going to take the MiFi back, but around mid-September it started working well. I use it a lot when I travel. For anyone interested in an in-depth review of features and service I also wrote a review about it on my blog:
