Interesting.

I'm not surprised at all by this statement.
They are not admitting anything, instead they say "A small percentage of iPhone 4 users need a case, and we want to continue providing them a Bumper case for free."
I'm glad I returned the phone right after Steve held the "special" antenna event.

Pure political correctness and marketing... make the producton batch larger and the claim reports smaller..

Of course the fact that its on America's worst network (See yesterday's JD Power article) helps enhance the vision that the evil Mapple could do no wrong...

Re: Wait longer, sell more, dilute numbers.....

I will say that I like the phone, it is a big improvement over my 3GS I had. The point is I can hold it without a case and watch it lose three bars, let go and they go back up again. It's frustrating as it is a sleek phone and meets the needs that I have, but I would love to not need a case to keep full signal.

I was told I can hold it a different way, but I should not have to learn a new way to hold a phone while it has been fine for the past 15+ years.

Re: Wait longer, sell more, dilute numbers.....

While the user experience for many is great not addressing a critical hardware flaw is probably just a way for them to save money. Apple has a slight god complex among its users since with other brand products this would have been thrown right back into their face until a real hardware fix was issued. However people are still keeping their phones but whatever, its not me.

I have Iphone 4 and let me tell about experience

So far I am pleased with it. I ordered free case though because its better to protect expensive investment anyway.

The only glitch I noticed when I turn off 3G, I may in some areas hear buzz or static noise in internal speakerphone. In areas where I had full 5 bars I did not hear any of that.

I took to Apple Genius Squad and they diagnosed it and found no hardware problems. They told me sometimes resetting iOS may fix problem.

Overall its great device and I notice it gets better reception than my old Curve 8310 (anytime I switch manually to 2G but usually don't really need to)

Bah...disagree with this one. BB does email VERY well, but the BB Curves we had were pure crap. The tech support people went as far as to tell us we had to pull the battery every day or two to reset the phone for it to work properly. Uhhh..no!

Haven't had the same problems with our iPhones.

Press and hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together for about 10 seconds. I had to do this a few times with my new iPhone 4, but not since updating it to iOS 4.1.

Yeah, but as I mentioned I never experienced that interference buzz with another phone. Except dropped conversations where I had weak signal.

I wonder if anyone ever had with other phone.

Re: I have Iphone 4 and let me tell about experience

It may just mean that the speaker on the iPhone 4 is not as well shielded. That's a common problem with car and computers speakers and GSM phones. If they are shielded well, you won't hear it.

Its typically only noticeable on GSM 850. You 'may' have been using 1900MHz during previous times.

you really are an idiot, he didn't allow flash back on it. Learn to READ, he is allowing apps to be made with Adobe CS5 that's different then having Flash run on the phone.

Good thing I stopped buying apple products after the whole Macbook issues I was having tons of problems and going through recalls like a old Ford Explorer. It's ok Apple because at the end of the day your product still has a design flaw whether you want to admit it or not.

AT&T Rep: I am an idiot

When I was in the AT&T store looking at the 4g, the sales rep said only an idiot would buy an iPhone and not put it in a case. I pulled out my 3g and said..I guess I'm an idiot.

I don't like bumper cases, never will. I've not lost a device because it wasn't wrapped in a case. Matter of fact, my wife's 3g that was in a gel case gave up the ghost after 18 months of service.

Still looking for the next "perfect" phone. Captivate is close, but not close enough.

That doesn't make any sense, you spend hundreds on a device and you don't even make an attempt to protect your investment?
At some point, you WILL drop your device. It's not a matter of if, its a matter of when.
Do you buy a car or laptop without an extended warranty?

Investment? You are kidding right? A Phone will depreciate just as much as anything else. It's a phone, not an investment. And trust me, as one who drops a lot of stuff, a case will not protect it in every fall. You really think less than a mm of rubber is going to protect your phone from catastrophic damage in a fall? I've got a bridge to sell you.

I didn't case My Droid X and I probably won't. I like going naked.

quote:
Do you buy a car or laptop without an extended warranty?
Yes. Last car I bought without an extended warranty gave me 90k of trouble free service. My wife's car with an extended warranty, she used it twice, once for an oil pan gasket and once for an A/C compressor. Probably not worth the $1k she paid for it. Her car is at 90k and has no issues.

Laptop:

Powerbook G4 bought in 2005. No extended warranty. Still used to this day for our Time Machine server at home. On 24/7. Never repaired.

Macbook. Bought in November 2008, no extended warranty. Typing on it today; no issues.

Maybe if you're buying a POS Dell (they all are POS's) you need a warranty but with good machines you don't need one.

quote:
Your not an idiot, your just a fool.
It has been statistically proven that the only fools are those that buy the extended warranties....

Re: AT&T Rep: I am an idiot

itguy05,
Educate yourself, I just got $517 for a used iphone 4.
A month before the iphone 4 came out, I got $407 for my iphone 3gs. Check out gazelle.com and nextworth.com before spatting off again on something you obviously know nothing about.

Guess what used "other phones" are going for? I'll save you the trouble.... far less than 1/2 of what they are paid for.

Almost all Apple products hold their value well, even the iMacs which I get about 90% of what I paid for last year. Its almost like leasing for only 10% of the cost --- Apple products hold their value VERY well, the facts speak for themselves if you'd bother looking for them.

MonsterRayn

@mchsi.com
So if you spend hundreds of dollars on something, you have to put a case on it? Put a case on your laptop or car, and let's see how it functions, or changes the design/feel of the thing you bought. Insurance/extended warranties are better protection for all three of these things than a case.

As you noted?

Um no. There is no antenna flaw. Drop it all ready, so tired of people who never used an iPhone asking me about "the antenna problem", only problem is i might jam it up the nose of the next person who "knowingly" asks about a problem that isn't there.

It really seems like people have been proactively looking for a reason not to buy the coolest phone ever made. It's pretty stupid.

New Revision could prevent sale of existing stock

How would potential customer react if he or she knew that new hardware revision is around the corner? Would simply hold off and wait few days/weeks to get newer for the same price. That's why they make these announcements so secretive

Right, because 600 dollars isn't enough to spend on something for it not to require a 30 dollar case.

On a side note, I think the iPhone 4 is a pretty awesome looking piece of hardware, but the absolutely hideous cases I see people put on them make me want to throttle them!

Apple never wrong

Apple has never admit they have any problem/flaws. If you need proof, just ask Apple Fanboys. When they finally come out and admit there is a problem, then we know it is big.

Btw, are they still running those "it just works" commercial?

Dumb PR move.

All they had to do is say "We had a design flaw and we'll give all current users a free bumper case to resolve it. We have addressed the issue with our manufacturer and the issue is fixed for future deliveries." (essentially making an iPhone 4.01 version for future deliveries.) Instead they lied and denied the issue existed, then lied again and said it was an algorythm issue with the signal meter. Now they lie again saying 'it's not really that big a problem'. Things were starting to die down and they just made it news again.

This will undoubtably be in the text books on how NOT to handle a PR issue.
