cable companies need to drop networks

Sure I would be mad if I lost espn, disney, etc but if my bill went down then i would accept it. I have Itunes so I could watch whatever shows I wanted to later on.
If I want to know the score of the game I have espn.com through my cell phone.
Content providers need to know there are other ways to watch content than just tv now.
Even if they block comcast access to espn online, I have itunes and my cell phone and I can easily stick up an aerial antenna on my roof.

Rate Hikes

It's funny..on this web site all I hear is the constant hammering of cable tv companies and the rate hikes..I have Dish Network and my bill in less than 5 years had gone up or as Dish Network say's adjusted almost a dozen times...Direct tv is no differnet..I wish people would go after the programming costs that keep going up, that effects all providers of tv services..Just wait, all the people that think online tv is the answer are in denial...When online providers start charging for the channels or content people will see that the networks and channels that over charge for their content are the true thieves..The networks claim that they have to recoup the costs of the talent...Meaning most pro sports content...costly actors that are part of tv series...One if these days it would be nice to pick and choose down to the channel what we want and dont want...Then and only then could customers have any real power over cost of content...

Cut the cord years ago

After being a directv customer almost 15 years I told them where to shove it. One price hike too many in those 15 years. Directv never raised prices until they bought out the competition.

Now I have OTA HD and Netflix. Also I have what is called free to air television. 36 inch dish on a motor. Watch over 500 channels in the clear directly off the birds in the sky. Totally legal as long as you only try to watch the unscrambled.

Not paying $100+ a month anymore for reality crap and reruns I saw years ago. Every one in the entertainment industry needs to wake up and realize we are in a recession/depression

Re: Cut the cord years ago

Many people are only blaming Service providers and not the broadcasters. Look these large networks and TV channels raise rates and want more and more for their channel. Those rate increases are passed onto the consumer.

For the services that are provided its actually a heck of a deal. Many households drop 100-150$+ on cell phone bills for the entire family all for phone calls, text and mobile access to the internet.

Yet complain about paying 100-175$ for a cable package that includes...Hundreds of tv channels including High Definition programming and DVR service, Highspeed internet access for the family including free wireless if you take the time to have them mail you a router, Unlimited nationwide calling.

I know alot of folks have an unrealistic sense of entitlement and want EVERYTHING for free but sorry this is the real world. There are plenty of packages and different deals available so that pretty much anyone can get into a package/price point that suits them and their lifestyle.

Or by all means enjoy your antenna/internet Television service. These internet channels are slowly but surely already beginning to charge for service. Their testing the waters and its a matter of time before your paying exactly the same price you were before.

If you want to be able to legally access this programming your going to pay for it. Might as well let a company do the hard part for you and just make it easy to access and watch.

Cut the cord use OTA

We have never had Cable so do not miss it. We use over the air for TV. Much prefer spending a few hundred dollars every couple of decades for an outdoor antenna then $50-100 a month for the privilege of watching mostly commercials.

For quality content we use Netfllix (DVD and streaming) as well as various only line streaming and DVD purchases.

Several years ago I was in the hospital so got to watch a fair amount of TV. At that time I was considering getting Cable or Satellite to replace over the air TV. It was an eye opening experience. Taking 3 hours to watch a 90 minute movie due to commercial interruptions made the decision easy.

DSL and OTA for us. Too bad DSL was not faster but then cannot have everything in life.

bundling is killing everyone.
We pay sports charges on all channels now thru bundling.
OF COURSE I THINK that this bs of $50million salaries and billion dollar stadiums is pure bs too.

like the asshole that runs comcast once said. Well if the people who watch sports had to pay for it they couldn't afford it..with a little laugh

split it all out and let us pay for what we watch the rates will be a LOT lower. of course espn will be $200 a month ROFL

Shorting Moffet

Has this guy ever called anything right?

CableSaTelCo rate increases will continue.

Despite the pirate and proletariat mob ethics that seem to dominate this forum, and regardless of my personal feelings towards CableCo, we still have 100+ million households in the US.

And so long as those households are mixed, with spouses and/or children, the interpersonal conflict will mean that both LifeTime, ESPN, and Disney channels are subscribed to keep the peace at the lowest cost.

$100 for a month for Comcast "basic" is a lot cheaper than a babysitter, a night out at the ArcLight, Couples Counseling, or divorce court. And it always will be.

I've renegotiated all of our big fat (nuclear) family cable bills in the past two years - shaving triple-play from $190 to $140, but no longer to $100, because the poor husband has only one refuge in life, his beloved sports channels and the DVR that records them simultaneously.

Re: Shorting Moffet

If I was not 100 miles from major cities and could get OTA I would drop the cable The are only a few shows worth watching and they are repeated to the point I am finding other things to do.
I keep TWC more for the internet then the TV these days. i was working in the Virgin Islands for most of one year and ended up reading a lot of good books.
I think when they hit $200 for basic and 3 play people will start bailing. I have about had it going from $120 to $160in 2 years while the programing has gone down hill.

I will say the shows on the basic cable channels are getting to be better then the Networks.

It would be really hard to bring more competition. The only entity that would have a chance would be muni-fiber in smaller towns that can do a complete build in less then two years. Then the only real competition would be Satellite and OTA because they would kill off cable and telco in a few years.

TV

It is currently being done on one ISP that also the biggest in the US. They are finding out that they have to put shows on the net or there is chance of going out of business. This ISP accept this fact of life and is geared to handle the volume that means to them. They work thru the electric coops and they are cutting the cord quickly and this is being done very fast. This is the reason for the decline from this one ISP. 90 percent of Netflix business is with the customers of this ISP. So you can see this is happening even if they want to hide their head in the sand. The networks are worried about this loss and that is why they put on their website.
